Regardless, do not look at any of the above mentioned anime because most of them are not similar to it.

Anime that is similar?

Accel World - It is a direct continuation of SAO, it happens somewhere in 2040 and it is by the same writer.

Log Horizon - People are also trapped in a game world, it is not a death game but it has it risks, not allot of romance but it does involve some romance. Barely any action in it.

Btooom!- A NEET gamer gets trapped on an island to play a death game and meets a girl he fell in love with in the game.

Guilty Crown - Was going to watch this but forgot, I think it's similar to SAO.

Mirai Nikki - A game created by God to create his successor, they all have to kill each other, the last one alive becomes god. The main characters are a couple, one of them is a batshit insane girl that loves the dude, nothing like Asuna but its its still love.

No Game No Life - A gamer and his sister get trapped in another world and are forced to play games, games mean everything in that world. It is not at all like SAO, no action, no romance, and you don't get that feeling of suspense but it is definitely one of the funniest anime I've ever seen.
