How important is *** appeal in an anime?

I know this question seems a bit off, but i couldnt help but notice the array of animes that subconsciously ride off *** appeal as a way to become more popular. For example

- Yuri from Angel Beats is always dolled up and all the girls wear short skirts.
- The girls from clannad always wear such cute outfits, would the anime be as good if they werent dressed in that way
- Haruhi from TMOHS always looks cute, would the anime be as popular if she looked normal?
- and who could forget The HighSchool of the Dead - it's success practically rode off *** appeal.

etc etc etc.

So, do you think an anime's *** APPEAL has any correlation with the anime's popularity? Would these anime's, or other sexed up animes, be the same without the *** appeal?

I would say in many cases yes, simply because that's just the way things work. It's the same in American culture or just about any culture anywhere actually.

However there are some pretty popular examples that are pretty successful without relying on *** appeal. My top example (albeit extremely mainstream) would be Full Metal Alchemist, the only character that really had any sort of extremely apparent *** appeal was Lust and it was the basis for her entire character.

Something can be popular without *** appeal. But *** appeal will probably boost popularity.

To me, it's mostly the drawing quality and detalization which matters the most, almost the same as plot.

It usually includes characters looking relatively sexy. Basicly I want characters to look closer to normal human look than to a caricature.

For example, I liked The Last very much due to the characters' concept. The're drawn very detailed, and basicly are just a pleasure to watch.

But I don't like the idea of any unnesessary hentai/ecchi content, it's a completely different story.

Well for me it's will be mostly plot and drawings quality. Why should I go to watch anime where most of the characters have sexualy sexy girls with big breasts where there is crappy plot ? Wanna wank then go watch hentai, easy as that. However let's look at The Another where it has a lot of girls which are not packed witch a lot of *** appeal and still this anime is the best one out there when it comes to it's category.

The animes you listed : Clannad , Angel beats and the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya i really love those.

But then you have fairytail for example with has alot more *** appeal and i don't really like that anime. :/

That's like when the AGK anime came out, they made Akame and Edeath's boobs all huge compared to the manga.

But you have to figure most of the audience its point towards are pre pubescent or just hitting puberty. Just like with "American media", all the stuff that glorifies *** is geared to the young ones who aren't getting any.

So, it is what it is.

*** appeal is normal. There's nothing wrong with it if its to boost character popularity. It's human nature to like something more if it's pleasant to the eyes.

Nearly everything has *** appeal in some way, shape or form. Look at some of the characters in Naruto, characters like Tsunade, Mei or Hinata have a lot of *** appeal.

The problem with *** appeal is when it's overused to such an extent that it replaces actual plot and story telling.

The way it is right now, yes ! it makes it popular even film and advertising heavily relay on it so it's not that surprising anime's using it as well and you have to satisfy the demand, if not it want be that successful .

Eh, sometimes if it's important to the character. And there's ways to have *** appeal as a character without being over the top or even being suggestive.

I feel like it's important for characterization certain warrior females sometimes as it exudes confidence, though unnecessarily emphasized in many shows.

And then there's moments like Fairy Tale that don't need to be as softcore as they are. Erza's outfit *** appeal is enough for that show as I think it fits well to her character, the rest being unecessary too often, as an example.
