Animatrix Question

Do i have to watch The Matrix trilogy to understand The Animatrix ?

My friend said no,but i was looking it up last night and the brief summaries i read said some of the stories take place during the events of the three films interweaving before the start of the first film all the way to the last film in the trilogy.I am not sure if he knows too much about The Matrix to make such a call.

I will watch the films after the Animatrix and finally see what all the fuss is about.

You have to understand the concept of the matrix a maybe bit, but not have seen the movies IMO, and I was a bit disappointed.

I know that the machines and humans lived side by side until the humans decided to kill the machines when one machine decided to fend for itself.From what i was told the humans had it coming.
