"Business has never been better for Japanese anime. And that is exactly why Tetsuya Akutsu is thinking about calling it quits.

When Mr. Akutsu became an animator eight years ago, the global anime market — including TV shows, movies and merchandise — was a little more than half of what it would be by 2019, when it hit an estimated $24 billion. The pandemic boom in video streaming has further accelerated demand at home and abroad, as people binge-watch kid-friendly fare like “Pokémon” and cyberpunk extravaganzas like “Ghost in the Shell.”

But little of the windfall has reached Mr. Akutsu. Though working nearly every waking hour, he takes home just $1,400 to $3,800 a month as a top animator and an occasional director on some of Japan’s most popular anime franchises.

And he is one of the lucky ones: Thousands of lower-rung illustrators do grueling piecework for as little as $200 a month. Rather than rewarding them, the industry’s explosive growth has only widened the gap between the profits they help generate and their paltry wages, leaving many to wonder whether they can afford to continue following their passion.

The low wages and abysmal working conditions — hospitalization from overwork can be a badge of honor in Japan — have confounded the usual laws of the business world. Normally, surging demand would, at least in theory, spur competition for talent, driving up pay for existing workers and attracting new ones.
"

Do we have aspiring animators here? I really do wonder how the industry survives. The animators who work on the show get paid peanuts and the voice actors are also not paid a lot, often having to do other things on the side to support their voice acting jobs.

In my opinion, the average office worker should be one of the lowest income earners, animators deserve a bit more than that.

Wow, I knew it was low but not quite that low. That's starting at ~$10,000 or so. Not enough to live on. Though I guess those sorts of people would probably still live with family or something so manage to get by. But it certainly isn't an attractive career to get into for newcomers.

The problem is not low salary, the problem is overpriced DVDs and the fact almost nobody that watches anime actually buys it. Shows that get 1% ratings only sell about a thousand copies? 1 in 1000 buys it? It's ridiculous. That's probably why our animators get paid that less.

They need an iTunes for anime. Digital downloads will save them from making dvds and distributing thus saving them money.
And since they don't have manufacturing prices they can make the show cost much less thus more people buy. Means even more money for the industry. Just my 2 cents.
