Angel beats is the one that didn’t make it. It was the fourth film made by sentai filmworks and was supposed to be entered into the holy trinity(Clannad, Air, Kannon 2006) . Sentai filmworks has a habit of animating visual novels. All four of these series are based off visual novels and they definitely make me want to play the visual novels. For those of you who don’t know what visual novels are, they are simply a story told in a game mode with an exception you choose which paths the story will follow.

With that out of the way allow me talk about what makes Angel beats different from the holy trinity, and what makes it special.

Angel beats focuses on violence and while it includes brief drama it pales substantially to the holy trinity. So if you can’t handle sadness, and want a taste of sentai filmworks I really recommend this film. It shares the basic characteristics of the big three, in terms of characters but in a new light.

In either case the best way to describe Angel beats is a heavily watered down version of the holy trinity. However this is where the show shines. We need a break from sad things and it is good to view shows that are shining bright without much stress. There are no sad moments in this show, just joyful scenes of people realizing that God didn’t condemn them to a cruel life, but in reality He gave them happiness. Once the people realized this truth they managed to move out of the purgatory state they were in.

The best parts of this show are

1. the animation. It had terrific animation and was spectacular.
2. the action. I loved the fighting while it paled in comparison to other action shows it was still a good relief and if you are a fan of Kingdom Hearts like I am you will love it.
3. the finding peace scenario: its funny how in this life we get angry at God and curse him for things that upset us. However in this show, they show that God really isn’t the bad guy and that we can find happiness. I really really loved this point and it made me happy to see it.

The things that I didn’t like about this show are as followed.
1. The predictability. When the singer girl disappeared I knew exactly how the show would end, and I was right and thanks to that I knew there was no threat.
2. No drama, while I am glad this show didn’t make me cry like the rest of the holy trinity I still wish I got something to make me feel at least stressed for the characters. However after episode 3 I knew the plot shielding on these characters was heavier then ****. It wasn’t like the holy trinity when anyone or anything can die. Especially since these kids are fighting to not be obliterated, and to see the plot shielding it made me just shrug off scenes and it was like, oh they will live, even when they were fighting the Heartless(kingdom hearts reference).

I give this show a 7.5/10. It was a good show, however the flaws were ridiculously heavy and even though it had good action it wasn’t superb like it was in Air or Kannon. I did enjoy the laughs and it certainly a good anime, but it is a farcry from the big three and its plot shielding is annoying as ****.
