Firstly the chances of Gai opening the 8th gate and not is 55-45.
2.And even if he opens the 8th gate i don't think he will die,i'll explain.
Now during the chunning exams conducted for naruto and his colleques kakashi taught sasuke raikiri and told him that at his current state he can use only two raikiris in a battle and that should he try to use the third one the jutsu will not be copleted and he will die!(probably due to complete chakra exustion)
But during his(sasuke) fight with gaara,sasuke tried using his third raikiri which was not completed but he did not die(maybe due to that orochimaru's curse seal which enhances chakra strength which prevented the case of totall chakra exustion and hence instant death)
Ok back to Maight Gai,the 8th gate is known as the death gate which is in the regions of the heart(this will mean after opening this gate the will be increase in;blood circulation,breathing rate,energy usage and above all body perfomance etc...)
it will be like concentrating all the energy of a person and using it all within a short time,
the aftermath of this leaves the person with no energy left to even sustain the body(total chakra exustion-close to instant death)
its like cutting off the power source of a machine(system shut down-instant death),unless the machine has the ability to store power for it use incase of any main power source cut(prevent instant shut down-instant death)
Now let apply this on Gai,he is and s-jouning and hence very good at chakra controll,therefore if only he is able to store some of his chak he will be able to prolonge his death(prevent instant death,remember they are all gonna die somday but just not yet),which i think that is what he will do,to hold madara off for while with the help of kakashi+obito so that after naruto is revived,naruto and sakura can restore him(Gai) back to normal.
3.Besides kishi can't let Gai die like that,who is going to rival kakashi?Yea i know you will be thinking of rinne tensei to rivive Gai but that can only happen after the war,which wouldn't be fun,the rival should be on the battle.
for all know kakashi was suppossed run out of chak and stamina a long time ago(just 2-3 kamuis and he is out of steam) but he is still in it to keep up the fun.
this why i think Gai will not die when he opens the 8th gate,what do you think?
