Why did the peoples of the world believe in so many different gods? Especially when we don't have any evidence of these gods. You might say that they were looking for a means by which to explain the world, but even then in order to keep believing and prescribing abilities to these Gods, there must have been some sort of evidence right?

Was God trolling and doing whatever magics these different peoples believed were real?

They couldn't explain science back then... they believed things like a rain God brought rain if he was happy with the people, or a sun God would shine light on those he liked more than others, an unsatisfied God meant you no sun shine, and they would sum it up to "we must have pissed off the God of the sun".

Socialism as well... one person talks to others about the different Gods, and what they presume is a sign that the God exists... not understanding science they find this "evidence" to look more and more accurate...

I believe in God, but I can see how science now can easily explain away the theory of a any God's existence...

Because that was the only explanation they could come up with to explain the world. They didn't know that lightning was formed by positive and negative charges that builds up from warm air; instead they thought it was Thor hitting his anvil or Zeus throwing bolts.

Because people are weak and immature and want to believe that someone is taking care of them and protecting them, a world without God seems to them merciless. People also want to believe that everything has been created for them for a purpose, that they are unique and play a special role in the universe and fraid death is another reason, and they have tried also to understand the world used by the gods invented by them.

Science does not work like this, it is objective and has empirical evidence at the base that are tested and analyzed. So the role of God diminishes in the world of natural phenomena, because science makes every effort to explain the universe without God.
It has come with a price, that we becomed rational creatures and we are conscious of our reality nature and the price is fear and insecurity, so people need to believe in something.

Why did the peoples of the world believe in so many different gods?
Statically is more likely that different regions would develop different gods based on different environments merely by chance.
Especially when we don't have any evidence of these gods.
There is a difference between what you know and what you believe. People back then could only believe most things.
Religion is what you believe might be true, not what you know.
You might say that they were looking for a means by which to explain the world, but even then in order to keep believing and prescribing abilities to these Gods, there must have been some sort of evidence right?
Evidence by today's standard? Not really. Polytheism, the most prevalent form of ancient belief, was very compatible with legends and tales. People would believe artifacts and shrines were evidence enough that the legend/tale happened.

Simple. Peopled need an explanation for things to help control their world. Science in that manner is no different.
