So I'm pretty much up to date with Soul Eater and I'd like to give a small analysis of what I've been reading thus far. Maybe somebody will get into it >_>
The main idea is that there is a school that trains its students for their duties - the entire foundation is run by the current "god" of the SE-verse (Shinigami), who isn't actually omnipotent and has a limit to his power (making it far less cheesy in my opinion). These students are either a Technician or a Weapon (a person that can transform into a weapon). The former and latter are partnered with each other. Their goal is to kill off the evil souls that eat innocent souls, and to kill off witches (powerful users of special magic). After a certain amount of those souls are devoured, the weapon evolves into a Death Scythe (the technician's goal usually). From there evolves a whole system of plot arrangements and plot twists.
Now these characters definitely go through periods of character development. I can easily name a period of time dedicated to every character I just listed. Might I say... the villains are also pretty awesome. Medusa is the Orochimaru of Soul Eater. Quite frankly there aren't very many "bad" characters in this manga.
Overall Appeal:It's a great manga overall (which is why I'm recommending it). Some parts may seem a bit slow but that's pretty unusual. A lot of people already know about this manga so you can probably get more opinions on it if you need to. This a manga that offers more than crazy battles.. it actually displays a good plot.
Plot:
This is a Shonen manga, so there are still some themes that will find similar in comparison to Naruto/One Piece and what not. However, there are plenty of ways Soul Eater surpasses the typical Shonen requirements - character development (which I'll expand on next), the occasional death of a loved character, and an overall concrete idea that's mostly void of ridiculous power-scaling. But on to the actual story...The main idea is that there is a school that trains its students for their duties - the entire foundation is run by the current "god" of the SE-verse (Shinigami), who isn't actually omnipotent and has a limit to his power (making it far less cheesy in my opinion). Characters:
There actually seems to be three set of characters that can be called "main characters" to an extent. The pairs are: Maka and Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki, and Death the Kid with both Patti and Liz. Maka is Soul's technician, and has a pretty timid attitude but with a timid attitude if Soul screws around too much. She is angered at her father for leaving her mother (despite his wishes to bond with his daughter). Soul is a rather laid back type of guy, but is good at heart. You'll learn more about him later. Black Star is Tsubaki's technician. He constantly wants to become stronger and has huge goals (think of Part 1 Naruto but even further). Tsubaki is a pretty shy and nice girl who doesn't usually get involved in much conflict. Death the Kid is Shinigami's son. He is the technician of both Patti and Liz (who form dual guns). He's probably the most professional of the ones I listed but is overly obsessed with bilateral symmetry (to the point where he would die over it). Liz and Patti are sisters - Patti acts like a lovable kid who takes joy in everything and is usually laughing while Liz is the more mature of the two but tries to ditch any overly complicated circumstance. Now these characters definitely go through periods of character development. I can easily name a period of time dedicated to every character I just listed. Art:
The art isn't really that bad. This really depends on the person. The fights may be a bit hard to make out but don't let it discourage you. If you can read One Piece fights without much difficulty then this shouldn't be too big a problem. This is personally my favorite comedy panel:
