Well, I'm finally getting a little free time and it's about time I break out with another one of my scientific/medical theories threads. The last one I did was the thread which discussed the cause of blindness in the Mangekyou stage of the sharingan progression. This time I'm going to discuss theories on how the various predictive combat methods work based on data gathered from the anime as well as humanistic psychology and general science.

First of all, what do I mean by predictive combat techniques? Well, simply put, it's the different forms of jutsu or training which allow shinobi in the narutoverse to predict incomming attacks. Examples of these include Tsunade's ability to spot attacks comming based on minute body movement, Jiraya's Unnamed Barrier Jutsu, and various eye techniques such as the Sharingan, and the Byakugan.

Since the last thread dropped off with the Sharingan, lets pick up there. Various times throughout the manga and anime we see mention of the Sharingan capability to see chakra as luminescent colors. Believe it or not, this particular ability gives the Sharingan it's unique ability to predict an opponents movement. Take a look at the image below.

There is nothing really unique about this image. It's a simple gradient. But take into consideration that this gradient demonstrates the meeting of two points, White and Black. The Sharingan works in much the same way. As the body moves the chakra which coats the body meets up with the matter which is ever present around us. As we know through physics, no two forms of matter can exist in the same place, therefore as one overcomes the next, the next must become aware of the previous. In otherwords, the chakra must extend (as the gradient above does) to shift the matter out of the way for you're body to take it's place.

During the battle in the Valley of the End, Sasuke makes reference to this by stating "With the subtle way the power enters his body when he moves the image of his next move appears clearly to me!" (Episode, 133). This form of prediction is unique to the Uchiha clan. No other shinobi uses this form of prediction.

The next method of prediction I want to talk about is used by Tsunade and the Hyuuga clan. That's right, they both use the same kind. Tsunade (as well as Sakura and other medical shinobi) train many hours to ensure that they are never harmed in combat. Because of their training, they learn to predict an opponents techniques using what's called "tells". This is something that can be learned in real life. Boxers, Martial Artists, and even fencers train to read their opponents moves through "tells". So what is a tell? A tell is a preimptive muscle spasm that occurs before a person launches an attack. These are caused due to the fact that Boxing, Martial Arts, and Fencing is an un-natural act. Dispite how good you are at it, you are not designed to preform the motions or reactions which are required in these skills.

When your body senses danger, your brains hypothalimus kicks in and triggers the "fight or flight" reflex. As humans, our reflex is weighted towards flight (ie to run away). When someone grabs you, your first reflex is not to grab their hand, rotate and throw them. Rather your first reflex is to jerk away quickly. The tell is your brain over-riding this reflex and converting it into an action. If trained fighter can figure out another persons conversions during a fight they can predict the opponents moves before they ever officially make them.

As stated before, the Byakugan works the same way. The exception here is that the Byakugan is stated to have the greatest ability of insight of all the dojutsu. Neji's was so powerful he could read peoples emotions and thoughts by slight eye movements. Because of this extreme attention to detail, spotting the slightest tell would be trivial. This makes the Byakugan's prediction capabilities far superior to that of the Sharingan, allowing it to predict before the shinobi even fully starts their move whereas the Sharingan is dependant on the movement itself.

Finally the Unnamed Barrier Jutsu used by Jiraya. I've really racked my mind over this one and came up with several possiblities. The most plausible being that the technique makes use of static electricity in the air attached to water molecules. As these molecules are breached the charge is displaced in a chain reaction causing electrostatic discharge on the surface of the users skin towards the incoming attacker. I base this on the fact that it is in fact a ranged technique. This would be the most effective method of giving you 360 degrees of awareness while staying within the scope of the narutoverse capablities.

Possibly to come:
I have theorized of what types of predictive techniques there are to come. I would like to see one based on Bandura's reciprocal interaction theory of personality in humanistic psychology. His theory states that our social environment molds our personality, and we in turn mold the personalities of those around us. He goes on to say that we are capable of analyzing the data we recieve from our social environment to determine whether to accept this data into our personalities or not, making us not just pawns to our environment but a human agent. Using this theory and the narutoverse chakra system, a predictive system would not be that hard to theorize. Basically predicting an opponents techniques by manipulation of their emotions. To be fair, I believe we have roughly seen this a few times in the form of Shikamaru but only vaguely.

Well, this concludes yet another of my medical research theory threads, I hope you all liked it. Let me know what you think!
