There's a difference between trying to get your point across, and just sounding pretentious. I personally agree with him. I don't find watching sports too fun and think there is too much of a focus on it in our culture, and a lack of interest in politics.

He is just being neutral. One cannot blame others or be aggressive to them if he is not well aware of their problems. I am sure that there are really intelligent, scholarly people who support their favourite sports team for example by screaming. So it is a versatile matter.
