President Barack Obama announced on Friday a nearly complete withdrawal of American military forces from Iraq by the end of the year.

"Today, I can report that as promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home from Iraq at the end of this year," Obama said. "After nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over. Over the next two months our troops in Iraq--tens of thousands of them--will pack up their gear and board convoys for the journey home."
Obama affirmed that he has been in talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and that the Iraqi government supported the American withdrawal.

"We are in full agreement about how to move forward," Obama said.

Although it was extended several times, the timeline for withdrawal was originally drafted under former President George W. Bush and implementing it was a key campaign promise for Obama when he was running for president in 2007 and 2008.

The military will keep about 160 servicemen and women in Baghdad to provide security for the embassy there.

Since the invasion in 2003, the war has claimed the lives of 4,478 American service members.
IMO, this is just a publicity stunt pulled off by the American government to keep Obama in power. What do you think?

They've gone, but now they're gonna get re directed to Afghanistan, which will be their grave unfortunately. Its been that way for every empire/nation that invaded it(Afghanistan) in history, be it Russia, Britain or now the US.

I don't think its a publicity stunt, a war has to end at some point, can't be there forever.

But politicians are smart about how to get re-elected, and Obama knows that if he wants to get re-elected it needs to be through the economy, not this.

I also agree with you. Politics is a huge Death Note series (Without the mass murders and all of that). All Psychological.

Why would Obama want to get re-elected anyway? When he went into office, he had very jet black hair. Now, present day, he has to use special hair products to keep his hair black because it's grey now...he's so stressed. X_X

I don't think Obama didn't try to do what he promised but found it more difficult than he expected. He didn't realize that you don't change a system like government with a snap of the fingers, He tried to implement a lot of good things but it didn't work out because the system couldn't support it e.g. Health care reform. His heart is in the right place but his head isn't.

He said, he'd pull them out in the start (before or right when he became president), but now that the elections are coming up shortly, he's trying to fulfill his promise (which he made 2-3 years back) to get re-elected, or just making up BS.

Air Force Guy here.

It is not a publicity stunt. However you have to read between the lines.

Withdraw from IRAQ.

Do you know how many other places in the world the military actually deploy to outside of Iraq? Thats just one Country, just a few Bases. We wont be IN Iraq, but we will most asurdly still be AROUND them. There is no escaping it. U_U

People have to understand how messed up the government was when Obama took office. That he wasn't going to complete all the things on his to do list for America. Bush left us in horrible shape especially with a start of snowballing debt and a started a war for his personal gain.

I don't mean it as a publicity stunt directly. I should've used the word propaganda rather lol
