Nice job lol
I dont think kishi had it in mind thou.
But wont amateresa be cancelled in darkness then?

darkness, as apparent to the human eye only means there is very little visible light present, there are still the other wavelengths of light that could be a source. although itachi did say every jutsu has a weakness

I don't think there's enough energy in the whole electromagnetic spectrum to sustain fire

the energy contained in a photon of light is equal to planck's constant times the frequency of the light (e = hf, h = 6.62606957 × 10-34 m x m kg / s), and the shorter the wave length, the higher the frequency. And the number of photons striking you each second is pretty much unimaginable. If we assumed that the light's energy was perfectly transfered to the flames it could be possible (cant really know for sure though :'(). Also we already produce usable energy from sunlight in this world and that is at no-where near 100% efficiency

Killed it. Its the best explanation I've heard thus far, and I love the fact that you looked at it rationally and scientifically. For people who say that scientific logic doesn't apply to this manga, in some instances it very much does; hence why Mitotic Regeneration is a forbidden jutsu because the telomeres of cells only allow for a set amount of mitotic divisions. I think that your theory could very well be true. Nice Work + rep

There's a reason plants grow so slowly. You can take a plant that has absorbed light for months and see it burn up in under a minute, with flames less energetic than amaterasu. Even if amaterasu does absorb all the spectrum, I don't see it being able to sustain a cloud of high temperature particles (which in numbers is probably higher than the number of photons hitting it).

It might make a good solar powered water heater, maybe.
