I remember in the early days, we used to theorize that Amaterasu was a jutsu that had latent time-space properties. In other words, it uses some form of teleportation to send the flame towards the target.
One of the similarities noted between Amaterasu and Kamui, was the spiraling of the Kamui portal, as well as the black flames as they come into existence.
Neither one of these traits are necessarily consistent between either jutsu, but are interesting to note nonetheless. Another noteworthy trait is the description of the technique given by Zetsu.
And lastly, that the term "Amaterasu" is used not only as the name of the black flames, but the technique that produces them.
I noticed people began to step away from this idea when the black flames were rendered as chakra-based.
However, has the latest chapter shed new light on this theory? One of the traits of the Amaterasu jutsu, is that it causes the person's eye to bleed, more consistently than any other ocular jutsu.
Many assumed this would have changed if someone obtained the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and Rinnegan, but it hasn't.
On the other hand, we saw bleeding when Obito was using Kamui to peer into Kaguya's other dimensions.
So, is Amaterasu a latent time-space jutsu that teleports distant chakra, thereby causing the eye to bleed, or is this just a coincidence? If it does teleport chakra, the question becomes, whose chakra is it?

Zetsu: W - wow... He burnt up the flames with flames! // --HE HAS SIMPLY TO LOOK AT THAT WHICH HE WISHES TO BURN, AND THE BLACK FLAMES SHALL SPREAD FORTH FROM THAT FOCAL POINT--

燃ヤシタイ所ヲ目視シ ピントが合ウダケデ ソノ視点カラ黒炎ガ発火スル
Zetsu2: By just looking at and focusing on the place he wants to burn he's able to make black flames spring up from that point.
