Am I the only one who wasn't suprised at all that the sage had a different last name? He is the first to discover Ninjutsu, so it's been implied that he is the originater of all clans. Him being just a Hyuuga, Uchiha, Uzumaki, etc wouldn't have made sense to me.

I was more surprised that his mother and his first name were the names of extinct clans, the Kaguya(kimmimaro) and Hagoromo(fought alongside Uchiha against Senju, despite having a similar clan emblem to Senju) also their last name has Tsuki in it and that's part of the name of the plan Madara wants to carry out.
