Well, awesome is in the eye of the beholder. It's a matter of opinion. Some people love him; some hate him; some, like you, don't care. However, I don't think there's any denying that he is a very powerful ninja and played a big role in the Naruto plot. He DEFINED Sasuke. He made Sasuke who he is, and Sasuke is arguably one of the main characters. Furthermore, he was for a long time seen as a powerful and menacing villain up until it was revealed that he was actually a hero. You may not agree, but I think that makes Itachi pretty awesome.
