Pretty much like the title says. I wanted to gather all the material (folk tales, religions, japanese and other asian cultures etc) that were adapted and added by Kishimoto in to what became Naruto. Please feel free to list whatever you can think of.

I'll start with some things off the top of my head.

Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru in Naruto are inspired by the characters from Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (Tale of Gallant Jiraiy)

Kiba and Akamaru's look was inspired by San from Princess Mononoke.

The Hyuga Clan having a Taoism inspiration. Also Gentle Fist being inspired by Baguazhang and Dim Mak, two chinese martial arts.

The Uchiha Clan being influenced by Shintoism. With Tsukiyomi, Amaterasu, Susanno, Izanagi and Izami all being deities in that religion.

The Senju Clan using Buddhist imagery. The clan symbol is a Vajra, and Hashirama's ultimate attack is a giant buddha.

I'll add more when I can think of more.

Oh this is a new one. Kishi said he was inspired to make Mecha-Naruto after Mecha Godzilla.

Both were copied from a Bruce Lee sequence so the cowboy bepop is not original either.. :p

Once upon a time at mangahelpers someone pointed out that Tsunade's depiction was also inspired from a game based on the Jiraya's tale.

The force was one of things that inspired his concept of chakra.
The force is inspired by the more ancient concept. lol Yoda is pretty much corruption of Yoddha from Sanskrit.

I was under the impression that chakra just replaced the word "chi/ki" in the NV. Since Dragon Ball, Yuyu Hakusho and other shonen manga use chi/ki as the internal energy that characters use.
It is. chi, ki, nen , haki , force all work in the similar way with differences being how the writers used it in their verse. Chakra is slightly different term but is used in the same sense. IN hindu concept:

" chakras are energy points or nodes in the subtle body. Chakras are part of the subtle body, not the physical body, and as such are the meeting points of the subtle (non-physical) energy channels, called nadiis. Nadiis are channels in the subtle body through which the life force (prana), or vital energy moves. "

Just for fun:

Ah this is a low hanging fruit.

Hiruzen's weapon (a Nyoiboi) and summon Enma. Obviously an adaptation of Sun Wukong/Son Goku from the Chinese tale "Journey to the West".

All the bijjus are from myths- nine tail fox being a prankster. ^^ Early Susano designs ( not the one Sasuke had after taking bijju chakra) resemble Tengu.

The vampire tree with it's evil fruit is part the tales of Juboko the Vampire Tree or a youkai tree that appears in many books related to Japanese youkai. It grows on the battlefield where many people have died and lives of their blood. Supposedly it lures people in eating it's fruit at times and then they become it's slave and do it's bidding.

I found the image above in the legend of Kodama which I suspect may have been one of the origin of Zetsu idea. This demi god spirit moves from one tree to another.

Indra and Asura- they are always at war in Hindu tales too and in fact in Zoroastrian ones too. In HIinduism there have been 14 Indras so far ( it's more like a title.) and Asuras are a whole group, though they are all cousins. The Devas being sons of older sister and Asuras being sons of the younger one.

Indra is god of rains and storm. Asura often are able to get better skills than the Devas making the Devas run to the Supreme God/Goddess for help.

Godzilla inspired him to want to have giant monsters

Aand apparently when ninjas actually existed they were believed to walk on water, weave hand signs to give them power (hand seals) and they would stare at there opponent to confuse them. (Sharingan)

I almost forgot, the sealing technique used on both obito and madara, arent they actually gateways to shrines and places of holyness?

Sarada=Sharada is one of the names of the goddess Saraswati .

The hand seals are obviously picked from the previous ninja manga or rather go back more and from Buddhist tradition.

@Bold
Yes they are. They are called Torii and are gateways to Buddhist and Shinto shrines. The technique is called Myojinmon/ Gate of the Great God.

Other things I'd like to add would be

Naruto's sexy jutsu being a homages to Kitsune's in japanese folklore of transforming into a women.

The character Inari, who in myth has a relationship with Kitsune (foxes/i.e. Naruto) and is a patron smiths and merchants.

Kaguya from "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter".

Danzo Shimura was inspired by the famed ninja Kato Danzo.

Hinata's twin lion fists resemble Chinese Guardian Lions.

Vegetarians rule. U_U

I know. lol But Naruto wiki mentioned both meanings. And Sharada and Sarada both spellings are used for the name of the Saraswati too.
nah wiki is full of bs also, Kishimoto never said anything about her only about Naruto's children and why he named them like this.

i don't see the problem, Naruto was named after some fish paste, it's funny especially with Sasuke loving tomatoes so much :p
