The ability to control chakra is essential for any ninja but Naruto in particular needs/needed good chakra control. To spam kage bunshin without fatiguing, to use rasengan, rasen-shuriken and to control Kurama's chakra.

Kakashi said it himself that it was essential for Naruto's development as a shinobi.

Naruto, in Sakura's own words, wasn't improving.

It was only until this happened that he began to improve.

That's right, it was only until Sakura tutored Naruto in the art of chakra control that he began to improve. This chakra control formed the basis for pretty much all of his achievements. Controlling Kurama, creating rasengan, being able to use 1000 clones without being reduced to zero chakra, etc.

Which means in a way that...

-Sakura created rasengan and rasen shuriken
-Sakura tamed the kyuubi
-Sakura became Hokage

Because without her help, Naruto wouldn't be the man he is today.
