Hashi was able to restrict and control tailed beasts with his mokuton, I bet he can do the same with Gai as well. But again it depends on the situation and the win could go either of them depending on that. Hashi also had that wide area poison jutsu that too would be useful in the situation.

Gai blitzes and trashes Hashirama.

Hashirama himself admitted inferiority to Juubi Obito. Juubi Madara is definitely more powerful than Juubi Obito (who is far, far, far more powerful than Hashirama) and Gai with the 8th Gate was so powerful that he could stomp Madara all around and almost defeat and kill him for good.

Hashirama < Obito because they have the same fighting styles.

Gai has a chance to take down SM Hashi, as long as Hashi does't escape.

Why do people forget that Gai landed a hit on Madara because of help from FOUR freaking people? Despite being paralyzed, he still reacted to 8 Gates Gai. Him smashing his bones means jack, because JJs have such poor body defense. A freaking sword went straight through his gut, for god's sake.

That is not gonna help him against PS and the Statue. Let's see how he dodges PS sword Slashes and over thousand punches. He's toast in the first second or two.

Oh man I'd pay money to see Hashirama just spam wood clones, and random shapes with Mokuton, and using mayfly and etc, to simply troll, while the opponent having no idea of where he is. trololololo.

OT: if gai starts in 8th gate, then.. gai takes it. If he doesn't start in 8th gate.. hes not hitting Hashirama. Mokuton is also known best for its escaping prowess (take the VOTE battle for example :])

Pure strength wise, 8 gates wins
But 8 gates is a once off thing, if Gai uses it then he dies too so its not much of a winning battle (unless of course Naruto is there with S06P healing abilities) And if Gai cant finish it in that attack, then he has no more moves, Hashi has much more versatility.
