Painful Memories

It was hot and stuffy inside the elevator up to Alice's apartment there was no air conditioning at all inside the small enclosed space. From the freezing cold Antarctic worthy weather outside to an elevator transformed into a sauna. A ding was heard and the doors parted, we stepped out of the elevator and both of us limped down the corridor until we reached Anna's apartment door.

Anna slowly reached into her pocket retrieving her keys. Kyle could still tell she was a bit shaken up from the experience. She kept on missing the lock of the door so Kyle took her hand and steadied it helping her place the key in the lock, keeping her hand as steady as possible. They both turned the key in the lock hearing the clicking sound that they've been too familiar with.

Kyle helped pull the key out of the lock but turned the door knob himself opening the door to darkness. They took one step in and Kyle fumbled around for the light switch. He was making it a hard time for himself because he walked past it without knowing twice. He ended up tripping on who knows what and smashing his head into the light switch without knowing bringing light to the room.

The living room was clean and organised but more importantly for Kyle, big. His living room was nothing compared to this it had a couch and everything. This was truly the fruits of labor in Kyle's eyes he couldn't picture a better looking living room. She even had a T.V and a DVD player, it was amazing. Anna does have about ten part time jobs and this is where all the money must go.

Kyle lead her over to her couch and eased her down onto it.

"Do you want anything?" Kyle said.

"Just my sword, get me my sword," Anna replied quietly.

Kyle walked over to a small corridor, turned left and opened the door to Anna's room. He got down on his knees and crawled under her bed retrieving a long case. He pulled it out into the light, wiping some of he dust off of the top. He flipped it up to look at the side with the small lock on it. She didn't want anyone to go near something her Mother had left her so she bought this case just in case.

Kyle knew where the key was, it was on top of her really tall book case. Her reasoning for putting it there was. No thief would ever be tall enough to see up there and if they climbed the book case would break anyway and I'd wake up. It wasn't the best reasoning but that's Anna for you. Kyle was smart about it or so he thought. He climbed up on her bad which was very close to the book case and he began jumping up and down on the bed. On the third bounce he leaped from the bed past the book case sliding his hand across the top of it knocking everything down from the top including the key. His eyes widened as he examined the mess trying to find the key.

Found it! He held the key in the air triumphantly but then looked down at the mess and his face dropped. After placing the key on top of the case he scooped the mess up and put it on her bed starting to whistle as he opened the case. He heard the lock click and he opened the case seeing royal red velvet surrounding a black sheath and dark blue hilt. It was her prized katana that was left to her by her Mother. Her Mother was not a swords woman but she always had that sword from what Kyle told Anna.

He took the sword out of the case and held it with both his. It was well weighted and easy to carry. He then walked back to Anna and sat beside her on the couch handing her the sword. She took the sheath of the sword in her left hand, gripping it tightly and she took the hilt in her right hand. A clicking sound was heard as she slightly pushed the hilt up with her thumb. A dark shadow covered her eyes and she had a dark expression across her calm face. In an instant she had unsheathed the long sword and darkness engulfed us. Literally. Anna's movement was so quick she was able to cut into the light bulb without breaking the glass. She blew the fuse and all was quiet.

"Kyle?" Anna whispered.

"Yes? Anna what is it" Kyle whispered back to the darkness.

"It's dark..." Anna sniffled.

"Yeah, yeah it is dark. Come on, let's go out for the day," Kyle slowly sat up and reached out with both hands trying to find her.

Kyle felt two small arms wrap around him from behind and he felt what could only be Anna's face being buried into his back. She tightened her grip on his shirt, her nails almost broke his skin. Kyle held back his reaction because he knew what Anna was about to do was completely out of character for her.

Anna let out a long and ear piercing scream which slowly eased itself into a soft sob. Kyle couldn't believe what he was hearing. Anna was crying. Kyle thought she was so strong and that she couldn't be phased by the hardships that faced her in life but he was completely wrong for eight whole years Anna had completely locked herself away from him. All of her sadness. And he had no idea

He was so angry with himself, his fists were clenched so tight that blood was drawn. Listening to Anna cry like this was torture, he had to say something or else he wouldn't fogive himself.

"Why Anna? Why are you crying? Is it because of what happened" Kyle's voice choked up.

Anna's cries of agony drowned Kyle's words out so much that he became frustrated. It was so confusing, Anna wasn't the kind of person to break down so easily . He kept repeating the same words to her over and over again but it was clear that she couldn't hear him. This lead to him doing something that he will regret greatly.

"Anna stop crying! It's not like anybody died! You'll get over it!" Kyle shouted at the wall in front of him causing his anger to reverbrate around the room.

Anna went silent. Her arms slowly slipped off of him and she came away from him altogether. The next thing Kyle heard was the sound of foot steps and then a door slamming. He had crossed the line somehow and he was desperate to find out why she was in this state so he flung himself round not thinking about where he was walking and fell across a table knocking something.

He heard glass breaking and a pit deepened in his stomach. He was digging his own grave with every action he made. He was spread eagled across the tabe so no wonder he broke something. He put his hand on the ground beneath the table trying not to get cut on the glass, he was unsuccessful. He came across something that was solid so he immediately picked it up. He rolled off the table onto the glass free ground then picked himself up.

Realising his foolishness he felt his way towards the bathroom in order to pick the glass out of his hand. He opened the first door he stumbled across hoping it was the bathroom. He felt around for a light swich and found a long thread coming from the ceiling. He was definitely in the bathroom. He hurriedly pulled the switch and light flooded into the room. He looked at what he was holding and suddenly all of the pain left his hand and receeded in his heart.

He was holding the frame of a picture. It was of himself, Anna, her Mother and his Father. They were both very young children playing happily together at a park while their Mother and Father sat on a bench smiling, looking down at their children. Kyle had made himself forget. Every single happy time with his Father, Anna and her Mother. He thought if he did the pain would go away completely and never come back but he was old enough to understand that that isn't how you solve problems.

A part of the pcture had been turned over and Kyle saw a flash of black as his forgetful eyes scanned the picture. He slowly took the picture from the frame andsaw that there was writing on the back. He read it slowly getting sadder and sadder as he read.

December 20th 2011
Life hasn't changed since the last time we talked. Everything is going great, there's no need to worry about me anymore. Aslong as I have Kyle I can live. I don't know what I would do without him.

December 20th. That was the date of both Kyle's Father's and Anna's Mother's deaths. For the first time in eight years. Kyle had tears running from his eyes. He slowly placed the frame down on the edge of the sink and put the picture back in properly with the side folded. He looked at his face in the mirror and realised that Anna had been looking after him for a long time, he was hopeless and if he didn't do anything about it he would stay like this for the rest of his life. It was time to grow up and mature.

He wiped the tears off of his face and looked out of the door. Some of the light poured out of the bathroom so he could see Anna's door. He walked out of the bathroom with a determined look on his face. He would care for Anna like he always has but he would stop being a continuous burden to her.

He opened her door and walked into her room. He was expecting to be shouted at but he wasn't acknowledged at all. She was just lying there, curled up on her bed slowly breathing. Kyle crawled onto the bed and layed down beside her.

"I'm sorry Anna I had forgotten everything, I'm so stupid and I really want to make it up to you. Is there anything I can do?" Kyle said hoping for an answer.

She stayed silent for the best part of two minutes. Kyle was about to get up and leave her to be alone but she whispered something that he couldn't quite make out.

"Sorry, I didn't hear you," Kyle got closer to her so that he could hear.

"Hold me," she muttered

Kyle was a bit shocked to hear this but he wanted to make up and if this is what he had to do then he would do it. He wrapped both his arms around her and layed his head down on the pillow next to her head. She fell asleep about half an hour later and because of Kyle's late night he decided he might aswell too.
