Though I can't say for sure if we can change a nature stone into gold for those things are being held secret or something, all the elements hold symbolic meanings that can be associated with trials in life and mind.

When you fission uranium you get small amounts of gold as a result. If you fuse hydrogen you get helium. Alchemy!
