The rings seemed to be important. Zetsu retrieved them. Orochimaru kept his ring after he left. So what were the rings' purpose?

No idea what they did in the manga though, probably were one of a kind. Given Tobi wasn't allowed in until he held one.

The rings weren't required for the sealing ritual. Rather, they were used to represent the different fingers on the hand of the Gedo statue. Think of them more as a symbol used to brand its members with importance more than anything. The rings and they meanings added purpose to the organization.
