I wrote this in another thread and wanted some discussion elicited from it.

Re: One piece
It has an alluring plot at first glance, and rubber power is original, but it fails to remain intricate in plot and is just really good character development with awesome levity sometimes. It has an extremely overrated story but people love the manga for its fun entertainment. Its fan base is the worst and coincide with Naruto's. Reason why naruto fans aren't loyal.

What is your opinion on this? No meanys no allowed.

Note I am an one piece reader but I'm not a fanatic. I try to remain unbias but I do not like certain aspects Oda has made in the story. Please try to remain amicable

I don't critique writing while I read manga. Either I like the style and read, or don't and choose not to read. That being said I like one pieces plot and don't find it overrated at all.

Disagree. You have no reasons to back up those statements of yours.

Meh the only problems I have with it is the inconsistency and the amazingly slow pace

The story isn't that deep, it's more straight forward. Soda doesn't go askew/ take risk or make it intricate. Like DBZ (which I'm a huge fan of) I find it just readily entertaining without ridicule. It's fun and awesome to watch but doesn't have lots of depth besides character development

The plot is good, it's to point where people are begging for flashbacks. When's the last time you've seen people beg for flashbacks? There was many mysteries in One Piece that people are so invested into finding out what it is.

As for statement stating that OP isn't complex/deep... There's a thread that should answer your complaints/issues:

Check the link above ^^

It'll answer your concern much better than I could. OP is complex/deep and it does outline a lot of themes throughout the series. Yes, those themes are connected to the series BTW.

Slow pace? That's how OP pacing works, it's not suppose to be all "fast-paced". It's an adventure and it's not like all the action is going to come to the SH's as soon as they enter the island. To compensate for that, we get a lot of content (most of the time). Surprisingly, the "slow-pacing" works well with OP. Also keep in mind that Oda is balancing the goals of ALL the SH's (9 people) not just one. Unlike other series where's it just focused on 1 person or a small group (4 people max) mostly.

I disagree that the plot isn't intricate. There have been details about one arc that becomes extremely important or otherwise relevant later on.

But is its plot really that good or is it just a REALLY GOOD entertaining manga?

A really good plot entertains.

Ok, I'll check it out but I'm not calling it a bad manga. Just it has an overrated plot. Luffy just trying to become pirate king and traveling to places helping people. Dbz save the world and collecting dragon balls. The story never seem to ever change except for when Ace died and his death was a plot device in a way. I enjoy One piece for what I think it is. I just don't see why people say it has the best story of all time.

DBZ talks about issues too. One piece might draw emotion which makes it more than an one dimensional manga but DBZ does too and people like to call its story abysmal.

DBZ; pride, bereavement, envy, love, slavery (buu saga), adversary, death, maturity, choosing a normal life over fighting, betrayal, oneness (fusion and harnessing emotion) and volition. By everyone's viewpoint DBZ must be a deep story for it had a lot of traits which made it not one dimensional, yet people call it simple.

I skimmed it, and I believe this; One piece is lauded for analogous but not ambiguity, it has a good story but is easy to comprehend. People who read can see the contrast between certain characters easily. The fact Fluffy does not have a bad bone makes him less human and more like a trope than ever. It has an APPRECIABLE story with a lesson but isn't deep

I could just as easily Naruto is just a kid who wants to be Hokage and another kid who wants some dark justice.

Or Death Note is just some kid trying to cleanse the world of evil while escaping the cops.

Or Breaking Bad is just some guy trying to cook meth to support his family and escape the cops.

Or Bleach is just some guy who kills demons.

Or Batman is just some guy dressed as a bat fighting crime.

ANYTHING can be made to sound as basic as you are making One Piece sound.

i like onepiece.. it has one clear goal while at the same time we see what luffy and his crew go through to get there.. there hardships and what not.. the character development is great and the adventure aspect is what really draws me in along with all the great characters, the only thing i have a problem with is the pace at which Oda moves at.. it would be nice if he would concentrate on certain part for longer as of right now he keeps switching back and forth.. however i can also see and understand why he is doing that aswell..

@SSJvegito

Basically One piece is a fictional story that's cool with some lessons. You obviously like it more for its coolness coolness. The lessons aren't that tactful and the characters are obviously the best dreamed up fictional tropes with awesome scenes. Not really that good resonating with us if the characters seem fake (this goo charauhvvrea

This is even stated in that thread , the trope like features

Not overrated at all. If you can explain why you think it's overrated then that'll be helpful. It's not just about Luffy wanting to become the PK, there's the SH's goals involved as well...

Zoro -> Wants to become the world's strongest swordsman
Sanji -> Wants to find the "all blue"
Nami -> Wants to draw a map of whole world
Usopp -> Wants to become a brave warrior of the sea
Chopper -> Wants to improve his skill as a doctor and be able to cure any disease.
Robin -> Wants to decipher the poneglyphs and understand the true history of the world/void-century.
Franky -> Wants to create a ship that can travel the seas/NW and can overcome anything.
Brook -> Wants to meet laboon

And ofc these dreams are supported with their respective backstory and all aid Luffy into becoming the PK.

Luffy doesn't have a bad bone? Luffy isn't a saint either you know, he regularly destroys property, he regularly undergoes dangerous missions that put his crew in life-threatening danger, he's glutton, he's dangerously stupid.

OK another thing. We actually have depth as to WHY naruto wants to be Hokage and it becoming more difficult for him changing the plot drastically than staying with it at first glance. Not to mention we have depth as to WHAT it means to be hokage and a shinobi and HOW TO become Hokage. Just that much adds so much to his character in a subtle way. Fluffy just wants to be pirate king, simple

How the hell can you tell me why I like One Piece? There are people who love One Piece because of the plot, because of the humor, because of the character development, because of the action, because of the freedom, and there's people, such as myself, who loves it because of each. YOU are the one who thinks One Piece is just a "coolness coolness" manga, and that's the trait YOU love, but don't try to lump the rest of us in with it just to make yourself feel better about it.
