History:
Background Clan Information:
The Azai clan, although a long-existing minor clan, gained authority with the marriage of Sukemasa Azai and Odani Haruno in the year 715, and begins gaining authority as a powerful, but surprisingly modest, figure throughout the southern riverlands. He constructs the castle Odani on top of the of a small mountain nearby Namhae, quickly becoming a destination of festivities and celebrations held by the Azai clan. They were, to the misfortune of the clan ultimately, known for their skepticism of the Freehold, in particular their effete authority of the riverlands. This culminated in his son, Hisamasa, participating the triple alliance attack upon the freehold in 740, permanently cementing the clan as a possible threat to the Freehold.
In battle prowness, they became primarily known for utilizing genjutsu, centered around the use of flowers to create various illusions before swiftly cutting their foes down using their kenjutsu techniques. Agnes somewhat inherited some talent with genjutsu, but is extremely poor with her kenjutsu stances being seen as a poor student back when the clan still had presence within the world.
Modern times (811):
The last two members of the Azai clan, Boris Azai, brother of the last Azai leader Nagamasa, and Agnes Azai, his niece, live in a cabin about a day’s travel from the troubled city of Namhae. Nagamasa was one of the leaders of the anti-corruption protests that took place in 797, when Agnes was five years of age. After his assassination by the Black Ones, the military leadership of Haguri, realizing an opportunity to purge themselves from a long-time problematic clan, claim the Azai as one of the principle clans responsible for ensuring unrest, and had a small squadron of Black Ones eliminate the clan in early 798. Most members, including Agnes’ mother and older brother, were killed in the slaughter, only leaving Boris and Agnes as the survivors, fleeing on a wounded horse through the screams and flames that haunted the now ruined castle of Odani. Since that time, the duo lived in semi-isolation, graced with the swift collapse of the authority of Haguri over the riverlands and the disarray afflicting the organization of the Black Ones, occasionally visiting Namhae for their marketplace and Katabami for their annual autumn harvest festivals.
