[Suggestion] Advanced User Tagging

Recently I been posting a lot in different threads, but I also seen that friends been mentioning my name in threads, that I knew nothing about. I lost the oppertunity to take part in many conversations because I did not know that they were even taking place. However this mod can help us against those of kind of situations! Advanced User Tagging is a mod for vBulletin forums. It gives you the ability to:

"Increase forum activity, by allowing members to mention each other in posts when talking about them.
This is done in a very easy way, very similar to how Twitter mentions people. We use @ ; as the tags, so for instance you could say:

This is a new Premium contest from @Zise; Take part in it!.
----
The “@Zise;” Will become a link to Zise user profile, it will also inform Zise that he had been mentioned, and link him to the relevant thread/post via a new area in the profile section.

It also allows members to “tag” the thread for specific other members by inputting their usernames in the tag box above the posts of the thread."

So why is this mod useful? Well Narutobase which have an international contingent (threads posted in during the night for some of your members don't go overlooked) or which also have a lot of posts/threads each day – again to make sure that a post a person might want to read doesn't get lost in the crowd - Happens to me a lot. It's just arrgh! I really hope that this suggestion would get accepted, it would definitely make it a lot easier to get around in the forums when your friends are mentioning you in threads & posts, that you're unaware of.

It's present on the former sister site of NB, which I won't mention for obvious reasons. I think in such a big forum, it is not possible. And yes, it has been suggested before. It may well work within small forums, but I guess it would be buggy in NB.

I seen forums bigger than NB, running with this mod, and they doing just fine. Of course it requires some testing before adding, but it is ment for big forums, just so you know

I'd like this mod to be placed around here but there are already problems within the database and things have already been removed to maintain database not so long ago. Like Nāruto mentioned, it might cause another database problem.

But I still support it, so I hope it doesn't turn out like that.

Recently one plugin was removed,(the profile visitors one) so I don't think new ones would be added soon. New plugins cause database errors and such. It has to be tested on another forum or so.

I like your Idea but as Naruto Mentioned it isn't logistically feasible.
There are too many members for it to work without detrimentally impacting the functionality of the various NB servers.
And also there are so many discussions going going on here by quoting one another either by means of logical comments or harsh/troll/flame comments which leads to the flame wars and Pointless discussions in the threads.As you can see if someone quoted in your post with a harsh/other comment,you just can't look and leave it away,you will re-quote that comment thus leading to the spam.

People can also use this for spam, keep doing @the same person. But if they do implement this, they might make a rule for it.

It sounds like a good idea, but with every idea comes its drawbacks. The ones that come with this idea have already been stated, so I will post my input. I like the idea, but it may cause some other problems. Not going to go too far into details, as I don't like involving myself with database and IT things >.>

I really like this suggestion, but you'd have to change maximum mentions per post.

The maximal length of a post is, as far as I know, 15,000 characters. Let's say that, on average, a person's name is 5 characters long. So that's ~2000+ users (whitespace + '@' character) a message. Since the default maximum mentions per post is unlimited, a troll could grab 2100 random profile IDs (login with cURL; crawl random profiles), and convert them to names (get the string between "member_username").

The aforementioned troll would then have a giant string of "@UserName1 @UserName2 @UserName3 ... @UserNameInfinity".
... I'm quite certain that you folks already understand what I'm alluding to. *_*

Yes. The plugin needs to be tested. The settings has to be perfected and it will be alright.

A few testing and perfecting the settings of the mod would do just great. I seen this plugin up and running a lot forums, it works just like Facebook, and it's just great man.

People can not spam with it. There are settings made, so you can limit how many "tags" a person can use, but of course. Rules for it would also be an alternate option.

It is a useful tool, that's for sure. But like the quote notification add-on, I'm not sure if it'll be practically possible to implement it considering the sheer amount of user activity NB gets sometimes.

Though it is possible that it has been resolved now, there was an issue with the add-on in the past which forced users to manually add the user's number in order to make it actually work (e.g.: [MENTION=210948]Muginiz[/MENTION]), which was very annoying.
Along with that, there was a very minor issue which was possible to avoid simply by using a semi-colon after the mention (@Muginiz; ), otherwise users were unable get the notification.
However, it's been a while since I used this add-on the last time, so it is highly possible that those issues might have been resolved by now.

It has been updated a lot. It had a lot of issues in the begining. True. However there have been done a lot of fixes to the mod. It's DBTech we're talkin about

I'd love it if it were implemented, but as others have said, it's been suggested before and has not yet been implemented, so I doubt it will be.

@Bold: The reason for that was because some jackass was using bots to increase his profile visit number, which causes the servers to slow down.

OT: Would be nice. Don't hold your breath tho'.
