Wouldn't placing new users in detention, (or into another usergroup; probation or whatever, that uses human verification questions) for thier first 10 posts or so do away with bot posts?
Just set it so that after 10 posts they move into the registered users group?

Yeah new folks wouldn't even realize they were in a seperate usergroup when they first joined. If they complain about having to answer a question every time they post, we could just tell them it's to check for bots, and that it goes away after x amount of posts.
I can't remember if not answering the question generates a report, but that would be handy for manual banning.

That makes a lot of sense and would save a lot of trouble for the mods and admins

They would still have to manually ban the bots, but at least they wouldn't have to track down/delete any posts.

But isn't the whole purpose of human verification is that, when the required text i not verified the post will be rejected?

Yeah. So it solves the problem of a bot registering and getting in several quick posts before it is caught. afaik there isn't anything built into vbulletin that will automatically ban someone that continues to try to post when the human verification is loaded. So it would have to be manually banned. I could be wrong.
It won't stop human spammers though.

I can't remember when I registered if there were any human verification options on, but changing that up regularly can cut way down on bot registration also.
