Not to start a philosophical argument here, but....
Yes, this is heinous and evil. But you have to remember the point of jail is not to punish people. It's to keep dangerous people away from society and rehabilitate them, as well as to deter others. If he's no longer dangerous, he doesn't need to be in jail. Vengeance doesn't help society, victims or the prisoners. Not to mention that it costs $35,000 a year to keep someone in jail.
Jail is a very dangerous place made more so by excessive sentences that make prisoners into caged beasts with nothing to lose. It's existence is as much of a deterrence as can exist. 10 years is a long time. Good behavior isn't easy in prison. He seems remorseful; and believe me, he will pay for it in every imaginable way besides his life.
