The whole point of a main character is to fulfil a certain obligation or pursue a passion, or any other thing, but to drive them into doing that, the author/poet/mangaka will always equip them with the tools necessary to fulfil that. Of course, this doesn't apply to all the literary text out there, but I can see that it fits in perfectly with One Piece.main character doesn't really have to do with anything. it's just plot that ace happened to be killed off like that before he became a real force to deal with
A real threat?
If that's what you're saying, Ace was already mostly developed - in terms of his strength, DF ability and haki usage (I think this might need more work but it would not make a substantial difference), he'd be a bit more stronger, but definitely not as much as Luffy, he was already a real threat.
