Since we know that to activate MS one needs to be in extreme emotion. Kakashi and Obitio activated MS when they felt pain of losing someone very dear to them "Rin"

And I find it quite strange that Madara activated Rinnegan just like that.

(May be fear of death made him activated rinnegan xd)

Jokes apart, I think there is something more behind this.

Well, it seems that the Sharingan evolves through danger. The one, two and three tomoe sharingans are unlocked through dangerous and stressful situations. The Mangekyou is unlocked by intense emotional pain caused by the death of a loved one. The Rinnegan seems to be unlocked by a near death experience (possibly coupled with the Senju DNA)

Madara was about to die, the dream he had since his young age was about to vanish forever. The extreme emotions + EMS + Senju DNA got him the Rinnegan. With the Rinnegan, he learned to how truly bring what he always wanted (Uchiha tablet) and...... You all know the rest.

Imagine how desperate he was when he was about to ''die''.

Dont know it didn't really make any sense, he was about to die of old age and he suddenly awaken the Rinnegan. I would've liked a better explanation.
