Did he have to use the Edo Tensei'd bodies of the jinchuriki? Could he have just used their actual dead bodies and put rods in them like Nagato did with his 6 paths?

Yes he can, thats the only reason why I include the paths, because he can use them without edo tensei.

Obito uses the chakra rods to connect the bijuu to their respective bodies, & since the jinchuuriki are compatible with their bijuu, they should logically be able to use the same techniques.

Obito's outer path is also more powerful than nagato's, so he can possibly do more with the jins as well
