were they Anbu or was that simply the typical battle gear of ninja in that generation?Because their outfits are similar and they were on that level+ since they were titled sannin. Anything below would have been a disacknowledgement of their power.

No, none of the Sannin ever became Anbu's. It is more like their outfit mirrors to the type of battle they are fighting.

Nah, I doubt they were Anbu. Orochumaru would probably be the only one to have the heart for it, probably. They were hailed as a great team so lizard dude gave them the title Sannin.

That was the regular Leaf style back then and the title Sannin was just a tittle they earned from Hanzo so it gave them mad respect its not really a formal title like gennin or chunnin and Orochimaru was a root member and Tsunade and Jiraiya were just regular Ninjas
