Boruto and the Kote device was a struggle (internally) when he was tricked into using it via Katasuke (the scientist). After he used it the first time, he was self conscious about it, in fact he was about to get rid of it until Naruto came into his room and congratulated him, and said some other words which Boruto (and his tsundere-like self) was pretending it didn't matter ... and after Naruto left he cried.
After that he was more open about cheating with the device. It almost became natural, you'll see the other parts about it which was an interesting layer to his character.
Overall after Naruto "died" to Boruto, when he woke up you saw Sasuke standing behind him and Boruto threw the device onto the floor while he ran to the Hokage Office. Sasuke was smiling at him when he did that.
After the Dimensional battle Boruto created his own Regular Sized Rasengan, and he announced to Sarada that he would become a Ninja like her father, and he would be her shadow just like what Sasuke is today with Naruto.
So yes, he attained a motive for being a shinobi, and it's obvious he trained afterwards.
