A weird observation

I were thinking about several stories and wondered why each of them had a person from the past , possibly generations old, who could put the current generation to shame. Why did the current generation not surpass the previous generation even when they had the intel on them? The stories and characters I am thinking of are:

Naruto : Madara, Hashirama and sage of six paths

One piece: Gold Roger, and the three ancient weapons

Harry potter: Four great wizards

LOTR: Sauran

Add more if you can find similar traits.

I suppose they come at their story writing realistically. As quigon-gin said there's always a bigger fish. Besides that's more of a saying meant to inspire the young it's not set in stone.

Its like 1903 planes are better than the current ones.

Its as a whole not every single individual shinobi will be stronger then then previous generation and in the case of the villains now
there an exception to that rule.There born from the of two of the strongest clans in history and have dna from the other.

Info helps but if you lack the skills to put your knowledge into action then it really doesn't make a difference

In narutoverse, we have seen that knowledge is the most important element to counter a jutsu (how naruto could defeat pain, minato and konan dealt damage to tobi, shikamaru strategy for hidan, jiraiya's death due to lack of knowledge)..even when knowledge cannot help mimic a jutsu, it can be used to counter it.

even if we consider that Madara and Hashirama are decendants of SoP, then so are other Uchicha and Senju. Moreover, madara's techniques are used by several ninjas now and everyone knows hashirama's jutsu. Its just about insane chakra levels which I think is absolutely stupid since there are so many others who belong to same clan, have practised jutsu all their life and have the requisite knowledge. This act always turns an anime into DBZ which I hate.
