I was about to make a prediction about that but I'm too lazy right now so I will turn it instead into a theory. So, I have read a guy's theory, I can't remember exactly his name, "Aim64" or something in which he had supported that Hagoromo is not genuinely a good guy or at least he has ulterior motives to which I agree.

So my theory is this:

Hagoromo was jealous of Kaguya's power and in general of her authority, so he decided to take her out. For that he needed his brother's help. And so it happened. After her defeat, Hagoromo became the strongest living being ever. There is no guarantee that Hamura died because of the Juubi or that he was sacrificed to achieve the necessary result. At that moment, the 2 brothers had saved the world from Kaguya's dictatorship and so it's logical that the two brothers would become very famous.

However, Hagoromo, knowing that his brother would oppose to him in the near future because of the difference in their opinions, he decided to take him out now that he was empowered by Juubi's chakra. In that way, Hamura did die on the battlefield but it was his brother that killed him, ofc that was something that was kept secret.

In that way, Hagoromo was indeed the savior of the world as far as Kaguya's dictatorship goes and because of that he had won everyone's trust. Ofc, knowing that people would grow suspicious of him and of his great power, he decided to give chakra to others and so in contrast to Kaguya he became known for the stability he brought by giving power to others, something that Kaguya was unwilling to do.

By acting like that, not only did he become a lovable "king" but he also remained the most powerful being ever. And that was his plan all along. He wanted to achieve ulterior power. He might have been weaker than her mother but at the end of the day in contrast to her case, he didn't have to fear of anyone's efforts to overthrow him due to the lack of equally strong beings like he was along with his brother against his mother, let's not forget that he also had Juubi's power once he became the Jin.

Now, he might have had equally good motives like her mother had at first, but in the end what he wanted was to be the ruler of the world in Kaguya's position. He might have helped in Shinobi's evolution but he was nonetheless a dictator, even if that was not visible because of how everyone loved him for achieving equality- again in contrast to Kaguya.

UPDATE

In chapter 683 we see once again Hagoromo re-appearing while most of the base thought that we had seen the end of him when he gave the power-ups. Now you may all think that he came to help and you might actually be right about it but at the end of the day I can guarantee you that Hago is a figure who will stay. Appearing once is ok but twice? There's no doubt about it, Hagoromo will certainly play a vital role, I suggest a bad one. Call it instinct, stubborness or even a biased opinion but I'm sure he will.

I think it went along like hashi and madaras story which is about to happen to naruto and sasuke.

the two save the world but they chose hagoromo like everyones gonna choose naruto. (Like hashi and madara) then hamura got jealous like madara which will happen to sasuke.

I don't think hagoromo was a villain tbh.

Well villain is a bit too much as a word. Let's just say that he wanted to be the one who will fire the shots and not his mother. After all, he did help in the end but sometimes a person with good volition can end up doing horrible things. Such examples are Madara and Obito. They did believe in IT's worth and to reach that they decided that many thousands had to be sacrificed.

Hmm. I still don't think that was his mindset.

Still it's a theory and it could be possible after all.

You have to read between the lines, sure at first glace there is nothing suspicious about him but the way he didn't talk at all about his brother, or his mysticism, even the grimace he did at one moment, shows that this guy hides something. After all, he's the sage of the outer path. Unfortunately I can't find now that thread I mentioned in the beginning but once I do, be sure that I will give you a full response.

Would they really be a danger to him? In contrast to Kaguya's case where Hagoromo+ Hamura= Kaguya, Hagoromo was now empowered by the Juubi's power so if the equation was Indra+ Ashura= Hagoromo, then because of the Juubi, the equation would turn into this Ashura+ Indra< Hagoromo Juubi Jin. Once he died, there was no reason for him to try to do something else. He simply wanted to be the one to rule the world. Once he couldn't do that, since he didn't want Kaguya all over again, and knew that Naruto and Sasuke would be closer to his ideals, he decided to help them to achieve the best possible result according to him.

Thank you and I try to be as good as I can, I've no problem with making corrections. After all, it's not my native language but to have a stupid smartass? GTFO!

Lol calm down, it's not like I suggest that Hagoromo will somehow be revived in Kaguya's position but rather that we will learn a dark side of his personality that was kept unknown.

I really don't like the idea that the sage was a dictator/evil dude but we'll see....

Again not everything is black and white. Being a dictator doesn't mean by rule that you can't contribute to the evolution of something. He might have been a dictator, who once he got full control over everything, he helped with their evolution.
