Toads & frogs tend to be around moist areas, such as swamps and lakes. They start off as a tadpole and grow into a toad/frog. They have a rather wet and slimy surface upon contact (at least I think so) and they have a long, sticky tongue that can snatch up food for them.
As far as in the NV, the 3 main users are Naruto, Jiraiya and Minato. They summon their frogs/toads from Mount Myoboku and with the required level one can reach SM with these guys.

Good, now we'll first do the summons, and then we'll do the Toad Arts. All I want you to do is analyze the summons for me. They are all pretty straightforward in general.
(Kuchiyose no Jutsu: Gamariki) Summoning Technique: Gamariki
Gamakiri is a cool toad, with a feminine appearance and behavior. A bit bigger than a normal person, he can use Water up to A ranks, and Genjutsu up to B ranks, and also use Oil techniques. Pretty simple.
(Kuchiyose no Jutsu: Gamatatsu) Summoning Technique: Gamatatsu
Gamatatsu, son of Gamabunta, quite weird Toad, but is a warrior still. Similar to human size, he can fight in hand to hand combat and use Water up to A rank, and also use Oil techniques.

Standing more or less with the same height as his brother (similar to a human), he can fight in hand to hand combat, albeit with a lower skill than his brother, but can also use Water techniques up to A-Rank. Similar to most toads, he can use Oil techniques.

Gamariki is a green toad that is about a standard humans size. Despite the appearance, Gamariki is actually a male and not a female. During the anime, Gamariki and Naruto had some funny/awkward moments between them. Gamariki's ability is unique to him since you can only summon him once. He's able to perform Suiton up to A-Rank and well as perform Genjutsu up to B-Rank. As all toads do, Gamariki has oil techniques that can be utilized.
Gamatatsu is the younger brother to Gamakichi (haven't got to him yet obviously) and son to the Toad Boss, Gamabunta. Gamatatsu is yellow in color and the same size as the fore mentioned Gamariki. He can as well use Suiton up to A-Rank, however also utilizes Taijutsu. As mentioned before too, much like the rest of the toads, he can use Oil Techs. Can only be summoned once.

A mid level toad, wears some Samurai armor and somewhat of a personal Toad to Jiraiya. He has the summoning scroll (forgot to let you sign, but its fine). He's chill, and can use Kenjutsu and Taijutsu up to S rank, and of course, Oil too.

His large size and strength renders him immune to all B-Rank and below ninjutsu. Let's pretend Gamachu was here, presenting the scroll with me signing it......cuts (pun intended) into signing the contract with blood and having his logo and name on the scroll.
This toad is called Gamachu, and you first see him with Jiraiya. He wears samurai armor and is apparently Jiraiya's best toad friend because they're always together and doing the same shit sometimes. Gamachu is a little smaller than the other two that are mentioned, just under standard human size. Capable of using up to S-Ranked Kenjutsu and Taijutsu, this guy can kick someone's ass! Can be summoned once too as well as use Oil techs. He's also the toad that carries around the contract for the toad summon, as well as the toad that gave me the contract in the first place, heh heh
Boss Toad Gambunta, the main toad you thought about when you heard toad summons from Naruto. He's 100 feet tall, and has a katana on his back with a pipe in his mouth. He's the father of Gamatatsu and Gamakichi. Gamabunta claims there are very few people that he allows ride on him, and if you're worthy of it, he'd allow another. Capable of performing S-Ranked Suiton as well as being immune to B-Ranked and lower Ninjutsu since he's super sized toad. Can only be summoned once, can utilize Oil techs too.

The Great Toads are all masters in their respective basic 5 elements. Being so, they are able to perform said element at A-Rank while being unaffected by B-Rank and below. Every toad is able to stay on the field for 4 turns, yet won't be able to perform another summon for 2 turns. You can only summon 1 Great Toad at a time.

Gamaken, a pretty big Toad, that is also warrior and carries with him, a shield and a sasumata. He is able to use Taijutsu and Kenjutsu, and due to his size, he's pretty much immune to Ninjutsu B rank and below.

After that, we have Gamahiro. A giant Toad, a bit quiet and has prowess in close combat and wielding two Katanas. He can use both Tai and Kenjutsu, and is also immune to B rank and below Ninjutsu. Pretty bad ass.

Gamaken is another toad whom is about the same size as Gamabunta. He's apparently a shy and modest and gives off the impression of being slow and ungraceful. Gamaken fouls everyone, but is a beast since he's a warrior with a shield and a sasumata. Because of his size and unusual strength and speed, this makes him immune to B-Rank and lower Ninjutsu. He's also a very good Taijutsu fighter, able to use most variations of Strong Fist. He's also able to use Kenjutsu if he's got the appropriate sword to compliment his stature. Like every toad, he's able to use Oil techs. Can only be summoned once as well.
Next up is Gamahiro. He's also another giant toad who seems to be rather quiet. The difference however is that he looks like he's a warrior, with the skills to back it up. He carries to katana's behind his back ready to slice people up. Much like the previous toad, he's immune to B-Rank and below Ninjutsu.
