A Satisfying Ending?

I think it is easy to see how satisfying it is for Naruto to have Sasuke on his side again, with the fate of the world on the line. If they succeed and the villages maintain peace, there is only the matter of who will become the next Hokage. The only problem is that Sasuke is determined to change the world. He now wants to become Hokage, or at least he said so. He will probably consider himself a better candidate than Naruto because he is personally aware of what the dark underbelly of a village can do and wants to erase that while maintaining peace.

If Naruto and Sasuke both want something, guess what will happen? A huge fight, mirroring Hashirama vs Madara. But, that's only if Naruto refuses to relinquish his claim to Hokage. It's not that either would be a bad Hokage, but peace can only be maintained if one relinquishes the claim or one dies at the other's hand. If the fight ends and the Hokage is named without the death of the other, the cycle of hatred would be start anew. Sasuke is confident in his knowledge and will not likely relinquish his claim to Hokage to Naruto (whom he may admire, but also sees as his goofy and sometimes foolish childhood friend).

Therefore, would it be satisfying to you if Naruto were to relinquish his title of Hokage to Sasuke? Trusting that Sasuke would bring peace, would it not be the most noble act he could perform? He could give up his life-long dream to follow in the path of his mentor, Jiraiya, whom both shared this ideal of peace. It could be the only real way to ensure peace.

What do you think will happen?

I can see at the end Naruto relinquishing the position to Sasuke. Not only would that restore balance, it would make sense. Naruto wanted to become Hokage to earn people's respect, but as the manga went on he started gaiming respect and learned you don't get respect by becoming Hokage, you get to be Hokage when people respect you.

Now that he has their respect, he wouldn't need to be Hokage.

A glimpse of an aged Iruka around the new children of the characters we know would pretty awesome. I doubt they would neglect to show the sixth Hokage though.

Naruto not ending up as Hokage is fine by me. but it kind of contradicts his nindo in an intense degree.
the plot stretches back from his dream of becoming one. it's hard to imagine that he won't become one though.
Well, as long as he ends up with Hinata and Sasuke ends up with Sakura.

I see your point, but if Sasuke dies and entrusts his will to Naruto, we are denied the resolution of their manga-long conflict. It just seems hurried and meaningless after everything that Naruto has done to bring him back.

If Sasuke battles Naruto for the Hokage position, he would never have a chance to even be a Leaf Ninja again, let alone Hokage.

I think Naruto's answer to the sage proved what was most important to him: " I know what a friend is, and I want to protect all of them." There is no desire for power in that statement. The goal Naruto talked about throughout the story has been to become Hokage, but the one thing he openly pursued was Sasuke's return. His question to Sasuke, "How can a guy become Hokage if he can't even save one friend?" puts Naruto's intentions in perspective: protecting friends (especially Sasuke) is more important than a title.

I want Naruto to be Hokage, but I will be satisfied if he gives it up for the sake of peace.

I think you're underestimating how grateful all of the villages will be for what Sasuke has done. Without him choosing what he has and being there with Naruto now, the world ends. I doubt people will hold grudges when they are only alive because of him.

Naruto may understand the dark underbelly of a village, but he hasn't felt what Sasuke has. His father and mother were heroes and he lives with their killer inside him from the time he was a baby. He has had a long time to confront hatred, and he will likely support Sasuke's return to the village. If the villages won't forgive Sasuke, all Naruto has to do is ask. He will have all of the leaf, Tsunade, Ay, and Gaara backing him up without question. Mei and Onoki will not go against the rest of the villages, and I'm sure they would also take Naruto's request into consideration after all he has done.

Obito is also surely going to die, but if he does survive he will be reformed. Also, nobody would procreate with him lol.

Sasuke will most likely be the last living Uchiha, so his children will be the only others, if he has children. If he stays on the straightened arrow, he'll raise them right and the cycle of hate ends. If the Uchiha become extinct, Indra's chakra will have no host. Without balance, who knows if peace can be sustained. This manga hints at a need for balance pretty often, Yin and Yang.

Plus, I doubt Kishi would kill Sasuke before he and Naruto talk about everything. If he did it would probably be a self-sacrifice for Naruto and/or in order to stop Madara/Juubi. I doubt Kishi would do that after how Neji died.

The only question is whether he will die young, as an old man, or somewhere in between. Once this series ends, there isn't supposed to be another as far as I know so Kishi could do a fast forward to any point. I doubt it will be shown though.
