Did Gohan ever surpass Goku?

Goku was always called the strongest in the universe but did Gohan ever inherit that title from him? If not Gohan, did anyone ever surpass Goku as the strongest good guy?

gohan surpassed everybody when he went super saiyan 2 against cell but during the 7 year period he was more focus on studying then training and vegeta and goku got much stronger then him even vegeta said that gohan had gotten soft when he power up for the supreme kai, he passed them again when he went mystic but then completely gave up when buu was destroyed
