That was just the tip of the iceberg, torturing and mindraping your baby brother into a psychopath and forcing the Uchiha's curse of hatred onto him just so he'd get stronger and then mindrape him back into a good guy doesn't seem like something a loving brother would do either.

I believe that Itachi being a good guy was a retcon.
