A question about Gaara's Sand..

If the sand from Gaara's gourd automatically defends him from harm at any time, does it consume any amount of chakra at all? Cause like usually the only Sand techniques that I have seen that consume his chakra is mostly his Sand Armor, Sand Clone, Sand Shower, Sand Tsunami, Sand Coffin, Sand Burial, Giant Sand Burial, Sand Substitution, etc cause I ceebs naming the rest...

In a flashback, a Sand Jonin was sent to assassinate Gaara: he threw a handul of kunai while Gaara was clearly unaware of what was going on as he was staring at the horizon on top of some building, but his sand AUTOMATICALLY shielded him from the incoming kunai.

Kankuro stated that the sand will act of it's own accord even if Gaara didn't will it to. The 4th Kazekage stated that it isn't moving because of Gaara's chakra, but of the mothers love...

Can it move out of its own accord even if Gaara doesn't will it to?

The sand does automatically protect him, but the sand can only protect so much, ie: Lee in part 1 was fast enough to get by the sand. He can also pump chakra into his sand to better its efficiency and its speed.

Generally speaking, yes his sand will protect him automatically. Is it fail proof? its far from, just like Susanoo which was once thought to be "the ultimate defense"

Yes ... his mother is watching out for him from beyond... he will always be protected regardless of his will.

Part 1's Gaara's sand was controlled by Shikaku (1 tails) He used the sand to defend Gaara, and thus used his own charka's and not Gaara's

While in Part 2 the 1 tails was extracted, BUT Gaara kept the ability to use sand so he has to use his own charka to move it now.

Defense wise- it automatically protects him. But anytime he wants to attack with it he has to expend chakra to move it. This is why he lost to Deidara, he had to use the last of his chakra to shield the entire hidden sand village from the explosion.

Its kinda automatic but it needs a little of his chakra...whenever he runs out of chakra, he doesn't get automatic protection anymore

It's automatic,when defending only himself,and will protect him regardless of his will. But when protecting another person or attacking,he uses his own chakra
