Here's a question that's been rattling around in my head for quite some time now.

As we all know, in part 1 it was believed that Gaara's mother died cursing the village and gaara for killing her.

However, in part 2 when Gaara is facing his father in combat, we learn from him that this was in fact a lie, and that gaara's mother died happily and loved gaara very much.

But as sweet of a moment as this is, it doesn't explain the reasoning behind gaara's name.
The name "Gaara" is made up of three Kanji, "Ga" (meaning I or me), "A" (more commonly "Ai" meaning love), and "Ra" (used here to mean a demon). Added together, they can mean "I only love myself. I'm a demon." This is also confirmed in the manga here,

and here again (showing that it was not retconned somehow.

So my question is, why did gaara's mother name him as such? Was gaara's later redemption and promotion to kazekage a later choice by kishi? Was it because gaara was more popular than previously anticipated, and kishi was torn between keeping his story dark and giving him some closure? What do you think?

I'm quite confused about that too, actually.
Maybe she knew what he was going to go through as a Jinchuuriki and knew he had to love himself?
I dunno.
