If the gedo mazou is merely to hold them in then why didn't Tobi just seal each beast one by one into himself ,

It obviously has to go through the gedo mazou to be combined

So the sage split the juubi for several reasons. He would not have enough power on his death bed to kill the juubi, but it would simply resurrect itself like when i jinchuuriki is killed. He didn't have enough power to seal it, so he split it, now, this might have been a chance to change the juubi into a force of death, chaos, and destruction into the oppisite. By splitting them, they each had their own personality, and traits. They are all different parts of the juubi in a sense that their personalities over all make the juubi, but all of they're traits make up the juubi. Now when"the day would come when they find true power" is the day they finally understand each other and the humans. One day they meet a boy named naruto uzumaki who finally proves to them that humans have hope. This boy tried to saved them, said they were his friends, tried to befriend kurama, and took out their chakra rods. After naruto proves himself, we see kurama's flashback of the sage. Kurama know naruto is the one that they will merge into one to become whole with. Now, with all the bijuu's good, AND liking naruto, wouldn't that change the juubi's personality. Maybe they have a battle in naruto's consciousness again.

PART 2: Elder son and The Juubi

Now, we know the Senju Ancestor was chosen over the Uchiha ancestor.With the senju constantly becoming a pain in the donkey for the uchiha, he needs a new way to defeat him, but it would take a lot of power. With the senju ancestor, i predict i had ways of controlling bijuu swell, like hashirama. The elder son used his ocular powers (possible minor version of creation of all thing with a sprinkle of izanagi) and created the gedo mazo. Its fitting since the elder son is the source of the hatred in the uchiha. In his lifetime, he either gathered some, since could not find them all, or a lot but not all. After this great battle, they are both left on the verge of death. The senju ancestor probably had friends and subordinates to back him up (he saught out peace with love and probably had a similar personality to naruto so he made friends) and the uchiha ancestor was probably a lone wolf. This battle was probably devastating but in the end, the senju ancestor used the last of his life, to release the bijuu.

Lol remember this, all of that bs just now was ad-lib lol. And another nit nack for yo last reply, lol you think its physical remains, what did the juubi do crap a statue while he was being split into 9 pieces a flung all over the world and then have is body hurled into space.

hmm why I actually like your First theory that makes sense the second one is a bit theory based but it is actually pretty good and it sort of does make sense since you need the rinnegan to summon it - an ocular power and it is like the birth of all senju - uchiha fights , it sort of reminds me of the hashi vs madara fight , how hashi had people behind him but madara didn't , it actually isn't that bad for real rep + (if I can , have given out too much in 24 hours :L )

Actually I think the term we're missing is actually revived , Tobi plans on reviving the ten tails a completely different entity to the individual tailed beasts ,
so actually Tobi does need gedo mazou to revive the ten tails , they cannot simply combine pn their own

The gedo was a summons from Nagato originally.

If your gonna take a section for proof take the whole thing it says he makes the moon not the statue.
