A major question about infinite Tsukiyomi?

For infinite tsukiyomi to work does the caster have to eat the fruit. From what I remember inside the bloom the fruit sits on top of the eye that's suppose to reflect on the moon... (I think) I'm not sure i have to read the manga again

i think so obito said part of the plan was to restore the juubi and use it's powers to magnify their eyes
he could have meant eating the fruit
