It's been a long and uneventful journey leading up to this, the climactic third chapter..............is what I want to say. Honestly, its been a short and boring journey in a fic that has had no battle scenes up till now. I keep trying to add some action, but nada. One day my dear viewers, one day.
“Sasuke…..” began Naruto wearily, his curiosity worn out by the series of revelations thrust upon him.
Knowing he was dead was one thing, knowing he was in the presence of Death itself was another but to find out that your newly re-bonded comrade had somehow managed to meet previously with Death alongside his own arch nemesis who had supposedly been dead was a whole ‘nother barrel of monkeys.
“W-when?” the blonde stuttered out.
“Right before I came to assist you against Madara.” answered the raven coolly.
“So, wait…….was that the reason behind your sudden change of heart, because of your trip with Orochimaru? And I thought you killed the snake bastard already! How’d he come back? An-“
“Calm down Naruto, I’ll answer everything.”
And so the raven began to explain the events that preceded his departure with Orochimaru, detailing the battle with Kabuto alongside Itachi and the arrival of his former teammates Suigetsu and Juugo as well as what happened after he entered the realm where all his answers awaited.
As the blinding light faded away, Sasuke could immediately feel a difference in the atmosphere that enveloped him. No longer surrounded by a cavernous mountain interior, the odd four-man team now stood within a grassy plain, the refreshing aroma of flowers wafting through the cool breeze that buffeted them, an expansive blue sky looming overhead.
Not a soul could be seen on the plains, the entire area seemingly abandoned but for the four.
“We’re here.” answered Orochimaru.
Sasuke took a moment to adjust himself to his new environment, his Uchiha instincts steeling his senses against any threat that this new world may pose. He may have chosen to follow Orochimaru but the fact that the Snake Sannin was a treacherous, immortality-seeking maniac didn’t leave the raven’s head for a second.
“Where is this?” questioned Juugo hesitantly, taken aback by the beauty of the plains that surrounded him.
“We’re in Purgatory, the realm where the souls of those who have yet to be judged lay in wait.” explained Orochimaru.
“Purgatory!?” exclaimed Juugo and Suigetsu in unison. “What the hell are we doing among the dead!?” questioned the pale Hozuki, his eyes swerving from side to side in search of any of the predatory ghouls or ghasts that he’d read about.
“Where else do you think we’d go to find the answers I need?" stated Sasuke."The dead hold knowledge lost to the living, this is where I need to be.”
“But…..how is this even possible?” questioned Juugo.
“Oh, it’s more than possible with the decades of research I’ve spent on the subject. Add to that the power contained within that scroll,” the Sannin gestured to the black-clad scroll hanging from Sasuke’s holder, “and we had all the ingredients needed to achieve such a trans-dimensional teleportation. However, even with the scrolls significant power, we can only remain here for half an hour or so, no more, no less.”
“That’s all the time I need. Now, how do we find my parents and Itachi?”
“No need,” answered Orochimaru, “they’ll find us. Despite the seemingly deserted landscape, our status as living beings probably leaves us sticking out like a sore thumb here. We may not see them but we’re probably surrounded by thousands of souls.”
“What?” yelped a terrified Suigetsu, quickly moving behind an anxious Juugo.
“Anyway, it’s likely that your parents will detect your presence first and make their way here. And if they have the capability, they’ll make themselves known to us.”
“Hmph, and how lo-“ before the Uchiha could finish his query, a new presence cut him off.
“Sasuke?” called a female voice from behind that took the Uchiha by surprise. However, his Uchiha composure took control soon enough, allowing the raven to turn around with all the grace and skill of an elite shinobi.
His dark eyes turned their gaze onto a pale skinned woman, long, jet-black hair framing her face beautifully.
Despite the years that had passed and the gore-filled patches that darkened his last few memories of her, Mikoto Uchiha still looked the same as she had always to Sasuke, a kind, caring woman whose presence after such a long absence left the normally aloof raven at a loss for words.
“M-mother…” greeted the raven formally.
Mikoto made no move to respond to the greeting, choosing to simply observe her child, taking in all she could for well over a half a minute. Soon after, her gaze switched momentarily to the Snake Sannin and the Taka duo behind him before re-affixing it back onto Sasuke.
The raven sweltered under his mother’s unresponsive gaze, wondering just what she was thinking at that moment. A split second was all it took for him to get his answer as the matriarchal Uchiha launched herself onto her son, grasping him tightly within a crushing hug.
Tears swam down her face in a show of unrestrained joy at seeing her child once again. “Oh Sasuke…….” gasped the woman in-between bouts of delirious crying, “, I've missed you so much! I’m sorry! I’m sorry for leaving you all alone in the world! We, we’re all sorry!” hollered Mikoto, creating an almost awkward tension between the Taka duo as they shifted their gaze away from the woman.
Orochimaru however gazed amusingly if not longingly at the reunion, all manner of thoughts slipping through his mind at the sight.
Sasuke lightly, his composure finally failing beneath the might of motherly love. Though he didn’t shed tears, the raven nevertheless allowed a smile to stretch itself across his face, a smile that seemed eerily misplaced on the face of the usually cold and stoic Uchiha.
After two or so minutes of a teary, heart-felt reunion hug, Mikoto finally released her grip, allowing Sasuke the freedom to breathe normally once again. “My baby, you’re all grown up.”
Sasuke blushed, the crimson tinge of embarrassment darkening his pale cheeks, as his mother swooned over her child. Behind him, Suigetsu quietly snickered in delight at how ‘the mighty Uchiha’ was being fawned over, an act that didn’t go unnoticed by Sasuke who immediately unleashed a death glare towards the Hozuki before returning his gaze onto his mother.
“Sasuke…..” repeated the woman, almost unbelieving that her child was once again by her side and all the pain and regret of the past few years were nothing but nightmares, “…..it’s so good to see you again.”
“Yes, you’ve grown into quite the formidable shinobi, a worthy bearer of our name.” added a new presence, the voice of Fugaku Uchiha laced with a sense of calm serenity it never possessed in life.
“Father.” greeted Sasuke along with a curt nod. “Son……what are you doing with that man?” questioned the former Uchiha head as his eyes found Orochimaru, his calm serenity lost, replaced by anger and rage.
“Was he responsible for……sending you to this place?” asked Fugaku, his brows creased in restraint.
“If you’re inferring that I killed him Uchiha, than you are mistaken.” answered Orochimaru, interrupting Sasuke before he could speak. “Truth be told, your little Sasuke here isn’t even dead. None among our group is dead.”
“Im-Impossible, the living can’t possibly enter the land of the dead…..it’s unimaginable….” stated Mikoto, her eyes wide in disbelief.
“Imagine what you may Uchiha woman, but we’re very much alive. And we’re here for answers.”
“From me may I presume?” added an eerily cold voice from behind the group.
Having had enough of people popping into existence behind him, the raven didn’t even bother turning around this time, instead watching the facial expressions of those that did.
What he saw wasn’t too revealing.
A strange man wearing what seemed to be a pink open kimono with a crimson robe underneath faced them, his pink hair falling in long, slick dangles to his shoulders. The sight seemed to oddly remind him for Sakura.
“And who are you?” asked Orochimaru, a hint of annoyance laced through his question at the diversions blocking his progress.
“Me? I’m someone who’s been persistently after you for quite the while Orochimaru of the Sannin, and yet you always managed to slither away from my grasp.” stated the oddly dressed man.
“If you’re not here to impede our way, then get out of my sight. There’s been enough of these distractions as it is.” ordered the pale Sannin.
“Oh, well, isn’t that quite cocky. Ordering the king to leave his own realm?” asked the man rhetorically, a sudden pulse of power emanating from him that brought everyone except Mikoto and Fugaku to their knees.
“Please, don’t hurt them……Lord.” pleaded Fugaku, his eyes revealing fear and vulnerability that seemed out of place on the face of the proud Uchiha.
“Oh, don’t worry my dear citizens. Rest assured that these people will be treated like Lords. Afterall, it isn’t every day that Death plays host to beings from the living realm, eh?”
In a flash of light, Death and the group disappeared leaving Mikoto and Fugaku to their worries.
