in the ninja world, earth release is manipulating the surrounding area to your advantage, and in a few cases, creating your own earth. it is weak agaisnt lightning but strong agaisnt water. earth can be used for both offense and defense, but of all the elements, this one is most suited for defense. its offense is mainly attacking the opponent from below

So how would you use earth to....block a huge wave of water coming at you?

depends on the earth jutsu. if it is strong enough, you can block the water with a wall of earth or you can simply go into the earth and dodge

Good. Now, focus your chakra into the earth.
Try to use shape manipuation with your chakra, and bring/create an earthen pillar.

i send my chakra to my feet and leave it there to condense. i then flow it into the air instead of sending it all at once to maintain some control. i then use the chakra to infuse with the earth, giving me control. i then have the earth rise from the ground i nthe from of a pillar

*using the same concepts as my first jutsu, i mold my chakra into the ground. once its there, i manipulate the chakra, giving me a degree of control over a smal fraction of earth. i shape the chakra into a staff*
