WARNING - MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS IF YOU'RE NOT PAST THRILLER BARK

I was gonna make this a theory, but there is conflicting evidence which can coincide to both sides of the story, for if the weakness really is, or isn't.

The next bit is spoilered for those who aren't as far in the anime.

I propose that the weakness of a Devil Fruit user is not Sea Water, but just salt!

This is what I was thinking, back in the Thriller Bark arc, Brook has proposed to Robin and Franky what the weakness is of the zombies which Gecko Moriah would create using shadows. He has stated that the weakness is salt, since they come from the use of a Devil Fruit's ability.

It would seem like a plausible reasoning, but there is a reason which someone could testify against this. There are a lot of things in the world, and the One Piece universe is no exception. Imagine, Sanji would have to use salt to cook some of Luffy's food, but does Luffy eating this food temporarily stop him from stretching? I hardly think so.

An argument against this would be that Sanji hasn't used salt before, since it has never been officially stated that he would use it in any of his recipes. It's not really common logic, but thinking about it, it would make sense.

Second argument, everyone sweats, even here since they exert themselves to near death sometimes. Sweat, or perspiration does contain traces of Sodium in it, an element used in salt with the other being Chloride. Again there are two sides to this argument. It would either a) effect them because it's an element, or b) do nothing because it's not complete salt.

We all know the natural weakness to devil fruits is sea water, because it contains properties which are used in salt. Doing a little research, salt's other component (Chloride) is usually double the amount of Sodium in sea water, which can really only mean that Chloride plays a major role in the devil fruit's weakness, given the general weakness is salt, not seawater.

Feel free to tell me my theory is made from crack comprised of your 3rd grade teacher, but it's just a theory which I feel could be plausible in the long run.

I like the fact that you made effort in your research and that you've a plausible theory forward but I'm a little confused as to what your point is?

Are they only effected by ocean water or are they also effected by fresh water from lakes and streams? I can't remember if any devil fruit user ever ran into any similar problems from being submerged in any other kind of water besides the ocean. I don't think the answer is so technical as salt though. It is plainly the seas own aura that reacts to the devil fruit users weakening them. A lot of stuff isn't fully explained in mangas it's fantasy and we shouldn't think so hard about it. Good theory though who knows.

interesting thought, but i've read in another post awhile back quoting oda from some interview saying there weakness is "moving water". the salt is just an specific weakness for moria. if you remember the war against the navy..when luffy came to rescue him croco-boy attack whitebeard...and luffy went and saved him? luffy's body was dripping in water..the only water there is sea water which contains salt n it had no negative effects on luffy. so no salt isnt there weakness it "moving water"

It's an interesting point, but if you were to think about it technically, Luffy's body dripping in water would make him unable to stretch like he normally would, since dripping water is still, moving water nonetheless.

he did stretch and he did it while he was in gear 2nd. technically its not moving water b'cuz he would have taken the water from the sea with his hand and splash it on himself(assumption on my behalf)...one that water is removed from the sea it is no longer in motion

I believe that small amounts of water or salt would matter that much because when luffy went to hancock's castle and there as water about half a feet above the ground and didn't seem to affect him that much. Its still sea water because it comes from the sea so my point is that small amounts of water or salt doesn't affect a devil fruit user unless you are moria's zombies

I gotta agree with this. Coz if it were just salt then DF users could swim in pools and streams.

If moving water was the weakness then how does the sea stone cuffs work?

seastones create the aura of the sea..ie moving water, as coby said thats how the navy fools the sea monsters and use the calm belt as a short cut.
if salt was really the issue they could have added salt to any cheap old metal and used that instead.
also in a recent thread a member mentions why the navy doesnt use seastone bullets against DF users, the verdict was seatone is a rare material...is salt was really the weakness than they could have also implement that into there weapons. clearly its NOT salt with the exception of geko moria ofcuz

Thing is, I don't think seawater affects the Devil Fruit's ability so much, as just stopping the user from doing anything in the water. In the Arlong Arc where Luffy was thrown into a pool of seawater, and he was still able to stretch his head out of the water with the help of two people. Even then when he was in the water he was still able to move his hands over his mouth and his fingers into his nose, so you couldn't say it restricts his movements.

Thinking about how Salt would be generally indigested which would moreso affect the user's internal organs, it's still quite plausible that salt is the weakness and not water at all.

it drains their strength not take away their abilities..if u remember they were holding his head up above the water he wasnt doing it on his own...
