It's alil long so bare with!...
This is about Kakarot & Vegeta being equals or is it just misinterpreted/understood...
From the start.. Battle 1:
When Kakarot meet Vegeta for the first time in battle, Vegeta was the superior fighter an would've won that bout if not for Kakarot friends & son..
(I would give this bout to Vegeta 1 on 1)
Battle 2:
This where things get alil weird when it comes to powers.. Majin Vegeta vs Kakarot.. We all know that by this point Kakarot has died an trained in the other world reaching a new pinnacle (He's given a pass to come to earth) so he has the ability to go SS3 pinnacle in this second bout but cause he's dead an is on a time release he cant use all his power or his time would lessen/drain for being on earth.
Majin vegeta SS2 ascended Vs Kakarot SS2: Kakarot is able to match him blow for blow an probably could've won if he'd peek SS3.. He held back..
Bout 2 goes to Kakarot..
Now at this point Vegeta is behind Kakarot until we reach DBS..
Kakarot goes even further with his power, now entering god mode SS (Battle of Gods) an by doing so brought back some of those powers in his ss ss2 ss3 ssb an base mode permanently.. (I think)
By this time Vegeta has entered ssb an it seems he's more powerful then Kakarot's ssb but there's a catch... Kakarot has Kio-ken that he hasn't tapped into in his Blue form so he's still not at peek while Vegeta's ssb is at peek till training in the time chamber..
Vegeta is supoose to be alil stronger then Kakarot durin Goku black arc but Kakarot's Kio-Ken is still not introduced until the end of the arc..
One could say if they fought at that point then Kakarot would take that bout but by very high diff..
Now in their current states an at this current time, it appears that Vegeta is behind Kakarot in power..
My thing is!.. Vegeta's always had the raw power out of the two an Kakarot had more finesse an could take more damage.. This is why Kakarot always ends being stronger than Vegeta & defeating the villain instead of Vegeta..
Vegeta is strong in power but not so good at taking damage an you can see it throughout the entirety of the db series once he's introduced into the plot an this is why he'll always be behind Kakarot in power..
IMO they are not equals an have never been, but I'd like to get different takes on it..
Mind you this is just my thoughts on this matter but I'd like to hear others an why you think Kakarot is behind or slightly superior to Vegeta in battle..
