yes and madara wanted "entertainment" from hashirama and it nearly cost him his life plus losing the strongest bijuu. Madara is a battle junky he likes fighting he did not hold back he got wrecked. It wasnt that he didnt try it was he couldnt because he was being pulverized.

And also, Hashirama is also a battle junky, seeing his fav opponent to fight is Madara himself.

And actually he could've done mayfly like Obito , and escaped, or connected the tree or done the bijuu damas.. Its the way he chose to take the fight. But it doesn't matter to him either way lol.
