All in all, Gai actually could have beat Madara during their 1v1. The only reason Madara lived was because he had the So6P's insane lifeforce as well and Hashirama's wood cells which allow him to essentially "regenerate." Without that, Madara would have been obliterated by the Midnight Moth technique. He practically lost the left side of his body after the blow, but you can see the wood "goop" dripping from him allowing him to regenerate. Such a shame.
