Shino: To perform a summon, you offer the animal some of your chakra in exchange. The animal takes in that chakra to keep the summon active. When the chakra runs out, the summon disappears.
Shikamaru: This works both ways. In addition to Madara being able to summon the Kyuubi, the Kyuubi could summon Madara with a reverse summoning.
Lee: So the Kyuubi tried to summon Madara?
Shikamaru: Yes, and this forced Madara to take in some of the Kyuubi's chakra.
