Ever since I've seen a 4K TV in the stores with it's crystal clear clarity, sharpness and smooth motion, I've always wanted to buy one. They are very expensive though, so it took me months and months to save up the money to buy it, but now that I do have the money I'm getting tons of mixed reviews from people, which leaves me unclear on what to do.

50% say it's a waste of time, while the other 50% say go for it. The techno enthusiasts and internet articles are full of mixed reviews as well and every time I go to the stores to get advice every person I speak to says "Don't listen to that guy do this and this", then the next guy sames the exact same thing, so who do I listen to??

The no goers say:

  1. It's a waste of money because there is no 4K content
  2. It's not an investment for when 4K content arrives, because by then the TVs will be better equipped to handle 4K
  3. You don't see the difference between Full HD and 4K unless the screen is very large (above 50'').

The doers say:

  1. 4K is the future and everything will become 4K eventually, then I'm going to wish I had one.
  2. It IS an investment because when 4K content is in abundance the TV will still be top range for the next 2-4 years.
  3. There IS in fact a difference in quality even with a smaller screen

So now I'm left clueless, get a normal cheaper Full HD TV? or Get 4K?

I remember an article said that 4k is only practical if its over 50 inches and that you have to sit really close to it for the "4k" magic to work...

Leave it in the air for a few weeks, think about it. Never impulsive purchase, I do that all too much and I regret it more than i appreciate the purchase. Ahaha i wont say yes or not, just recommend you to leave it in the air for about a week or two to think about it.

My friend has a 4K tv. I have a regular HD flat screen, I see no difference. But then again my tv is bigger than his. I think his is in the 40s while mine is 55. I reccomend getting either a smart TV(I just bought one, very happy with the purchase) or a curve.

If there is not to much difference don't buy it, like they said, is an investment for the future 4k content but till we get there there will be better technology and will be more cheaper to buy a 4k TV, my advice is to get the better 1080p TV out there and keep saving for the 4k to go down enough just in case is not what you expected and realize it was a waste of money, but is your call at the end so happy buying!!!

4K is the future. Bottom line.

However, there are only a handful of media readily available that are intended to take advantage of the increased picture quality. This number is growing, but media companies are not going to make a mass transition while many consumers still use DVD and standard HD BluRay formats. The videogame industry will likely adapt relatively quickly to 4K technology, but current systems, processors, and graphics cards are likely not ideal for use with a 4K display.

Also, there is a limit to the difference between 4K and current (cheaper) displays that are smaller than 50". This is because the compact display size tends to condense the image anyways. Therefore, since the human eye is generally not capable of recognizing subtle differences at that scale, the increased picture quality only becomes essential with truly large-scale displays. In other words, if you are looking for a display in the 50"+ range, 4K might be the way to go.

As for the 2-4 years thing. Moore's Law still applies. By the time 4K supported media becomes mainstream, the current models are going to be outdated and cheaper. Sure, a 4K TV would be impressive if you wanted to show it off to your videophile friends, but so would a cheaper, and probably larger, HD display.

At the end of the day, its your money and your display. If you can't tell the difference between HD and 4K, you might just want to upgrade your entertainment center in other ways.

Try doing this. Think of the TV in your room, and then think of the price of the TV in your room in all cash. Which one do you think will be more useful. Considering your TV is probably HD as it is, it's definitely not bad. I suggest giving it time until it becomes mainstream

Wow guys thanks a lot everyone!! You all being waaay more helpful than the actual guys who sell these TVs.

My room is quite big, and my current TV sucks big time :( It's full HD 32", but the colour isn't as crisp and clear as other Full HD TVs I suppose because it's not LED. It's not nice at all, which is why I want to buy another one.

I think I'm leaning towards 4K more now, since there will be content in the future and above 50" the difference will be noticed. I can afford a 55".

Some things still bug me, like the fact that in 2 years time the TVs will probably made to suit 4K better, but that's just how technology is I guess.

4K resolution TV in a nut shell:

+ it is big
+ it supports 4k resolution
+ you can make fun of the TVs of your friends

- most movies and series only support up to 1080p
- super slow input, if you play video-games, it is equal to adding another 25-50ms to your ping
- super expensive at the moment

Side-note: above notes do not count for 4k pc monitors, since that is a completely other story
