The sharingan can see chakra, chakra flow and 2T and higher, has the ability to recognaise different natures of chakra, this helps its user tell when he or his partner is under genjutsu, because his chakra flow would be irregular.
However the byakugan can see chakra with a far greater precision than the sharingan, being able to see the chakra flow accurately and even the tenketsu, this ability is important to their unique taijutsu style.
Sharingan cannot see through dense objects like large rocks or walls, but they can see chakra through a non chakra infused object while byakugan can see through far denser objects with far more precision, infact its like x-ray vision and on top of that, they have almost 360 degree of vision, with far more range.
As for genjutsu, I honestly don't know much about byakugan, but the sharingan can break through visual genjutsu depending on rank (C rank and below for 2T) and can tell if its user is under genjutsu, however if a 2T user like me is cast a genjutsu, he won't see his chakra flow, but will see himself in the genjutsu, so he wouldn't be able to tell if he is under a genjutsu
